No it is not to early to top. I'd go 3rd or 4th node. The ideal thing to do would be not to transplant and top your plant(s) within the same week regradless of the order. Slight stress/shock is possible after transplanting, and slight stress is certain after topping...If I were you I wouldn't want to throw both things at the plants at the same time. Does it really matter? Probably not. Will it help slightly? Probably so.
