I think the root of a lot of problems we see today with abuse of power stem from the logic portrayed in these films. Basically it's a human behavior study where two groups of people are paid to be a part of a study on prison guards/inmates. Half the group is guards and half are inmates and they have to follow the rules of the engagement or nobody get's paid. Things escalate fast even though it's not a real prison or real guards.
