Well I found a bag seed from a strain called The Orange a few weeks back and figured, if I could get this to germinate, it would be a cool house plant. The seed germinated within 72 hours and I planted it on June 10th. This morning I check it, hoping that it continues to grow, and low-and-behold, life has happened!

I have never grown any herb, but growing up on a farm gave me one hell of a green thumb. I'm going to keep an eye on it for the next few weeks. Hopefully it's a female! :smoke:

6.16.10 Update: This little beauty is loving the sun we've had this week. Growing quite fast! I also found 3 seeds from The Green Goo that I started germinating yesterday. They should be ready to plant tomorrow or friday!

  2. What kind of soil is that?

  3. Just basic outdoor potting soil. This will be an outdoor plant most of the time.

  4. Aww it looks cute. :)

  5. Oh okay, so how far along are you on yoru growing passage?

  6. I have no clue what you're asking. Like I said, never done this before.

  7. I haven't ever heard of "Basic" brand soil before. Is that like Acme?

The question here to ask is "Is that Miracle Grow Potting Soil with Moisture Control, promising to feed plants for up to 6 months?" Because if it is, you made a small mistake using that soil for pot. All dirts are not equal and many a young MJ plant has been ruined with this soil. Some people can use it by adding and cutting to it, but for a seedling...

Also, the other poster was trying to ask "How long have you been growing and how much research have you done?" For most real growers, caregivers that is, you are growing medicine. You don't want junk food generic brand crap medicine. You want some premo clean and healthy medicine. Knowledge is pretty much the only way to accomplish that, aside from dumb luck, and if you don't have the knowledge or the desire to gain it then you should ditch the whole caregiver idea.

The Orange, as I know it, is a California Skunk. A special phenotype that produces huge big buds with a ton of bright orange hairs and a super weedy/skunky smell. It's a great strain and you did luck out. The issue here is that you only have one plant. If this seed comes from a hermaphrodited mother then you have a 1 in 3 chance of getting a female that will produce buds you can use, a 1 in 3 chance for a herm that will seed itself, and a 1 in 3 chance of getting a male you can't do anything with.

If it isn't a hermed seed result then it could be a cross of some unknown strain, which gives you a 50/50 shot of a shwag first generation and a fire/bomb first generation.

Do some research and feel free to ask questions. Ask first, shoot later, and keep it simple.

  8. Ok...here's the deal. I'm growing this plant as a plant. I don't care if it produces anything. The caregiver comment wasn't serious. I was just happy with the fact that a bag seed germinated and sprouted. I've tried a few before with no success. If it produces, well, awesome, if not, I don't really care.

I'm not trying to sound like a dick, but I didn't really think I'd have people jumping down my throat telling me I made mistakes on a bag seed that I threw in a pot. Like I said, just thought it was cool that it sprouted and I figured I'd share that with the boards.

  9. Yeah, seeds'll do that...

I didn't mean to jump on you in the slightest. You sounded like you wanted a yield, and now you don't. So that's different. I'd hope you would use this as a chance to just learn a bit about the plant you and we all love.

  10. haha to the OP i'm on the same page as you. i love checkin my little buddies every day to see if they've grown.

  11. OP. It is really cool that it's growing:hello: I wish you success.:smoking:

  12. If this plant produces, it would be great, but I'm kind of using this plant as a "starter plant" and I don't want to get my hopes up. I have started reading up on the stickies here. Lots of good info.

If I were to get serious about caregiving, I'd want to set up a nice grow room and do it right, but there needs to be some trial and error before I invest any large amounts of $$, haha.

I have a feeling this board is going to become a lot more than bud and glass porn for me now :D

  13. Providing for my girl and myself has been extremely beneficial to our pocket books. The up front cost of getting started is a little much. $600 is pretty typical to spend on 3 female plants in a 2x4 tent using a 400w system. The upside is that I had 3 harvests of 6 to 8 ounces from that system (during my learning period).

Spending a little more, like $1000 to $1200 sets up a good 1000w system with 12 plants or so in a nicely sized room. From a system like this the harvest is usually in the 600 to 800 grams range (with about $800 on a CO2 system and AC unit) it's more like 1000 to 1200 grams.

Now, what do two people do with 6 plus pounds of doja per year from a $2000 investment? You can make an ass load of hash and kief and butter and oil, chocolate sauce, carmel sauce, effing ANYTHING!!!

Most people here are very young, probably can't even buy a beer legally, but if you start early and build the knowledge base you can add $10 a week into a jar for savings. By the end of the year you can get yourself started with a decent closet system. Maybe you use a little birthday money or maybe you're an adult with a job, whatever the case is you should be to plan out a good 1000w system to add on to what you have sooner than you might think.

The savings is rediculous! Especially if you buy $50 eighths. Even at $300 ounces these systems pay for themselves ten times over. All you really need is the experience. My first grow was very similar to yours. I used straight soil from the yard with bugs and shit, no perlite, and I had root rot because it was like a 1 foot plant in a 20 gallon planter. I had to have an old school Santa Cruzian save our plant, only to have it herm. Seeds galore. My next grow was in a shed during a summer with no cooling. I was growing durban poison in 110 degrees using home depot 4' fluorescent shop lights. I even used miracle grow rose potting soil (wasn't bad btw). It took 2 really effed up grows just to get the idea of what was even going on. So then I set out to breed some Mr. Nice G13xHashplant with BC Big Bud and got a seed stock. It was with this stock that I was really able to experiment because I had hundreds of them.

So a dozen or more harvests later and I've FINALLY started to feel like I have this shit down cold. I know deficiencies and burns because I've had them. Mold, Spidermites, heat, cats... I've been there and done that. And the only reason was because I never had a place like this to use and learn from (though I find myself doing a bit more teaching).

I learned a lot of good stuff from the marijuana growing bible, via the "growing marijuana torrent." Jorge Cervantes 3 part video series put pictures to words for me, and then a couple of high times magazines let me in on some nice strains and more info. There are more good places for info than you might think.

  14. haha why ya being such a dick to him bro? and apparrently not because the potting soil is "wrong" haha. you need to ease up dude

  15. Just posted up some new pics. Never realized how pretty of a plant it is.
