pot design drainage

  1. Im going to grow one plant outdoor next season and im designing my pot

I figure the less i have to water the better
could i put my drain holes about two inches from the bottom so the plant can go longer without water or is this no good

  2. If you are going to use pots outdoors, Fabric smartpots are the only way to go. The plant won't get root bound. You don't need to recreate the wheel.

  3. what do you mean by recreate the wheel?

  4. Do no let standing water sit in your pot, very bad idea.

Like Mahmo said, don't recreate the wheel. Just use a smart pot like everybody else.

  5. Look up SIP's or SWICK's. Maybe @BrassNwood will chime in. He has a pretty slick outdoor SIP.

  6. Man, I have been growing for 20 years. I don't need a google search, I have tried it all.

Leaving standing water will no doubt result in root rot. Period. If you need water retention, higher amounts of clay in the soil will help big time.

I run super porous soil in 100 degree heat with 10 foot plants. No standing water needed.
