Overdriving T5 lamps?

Discussion in 'Lighting' started by Zoneblazed, Jan 15, 2016.

  1. Alright so i know this is possible (overdriving a t5). My question though is a little bit different than anything i could find in my searches. This thread helped me a lot https://forum.grasscity.com/lighting/1139787-t5-re...

But heres the thing, i was just messing around with a shattered 23 w cfl; i thought " i wonder if i can power one of my extra 24w t5 ho bulbs with this 23w ballast?" Sure enough it worked. So i started reading all about overdriving.

I am almost positive the answer will be yes, but im wondering if i could build my own 2 foot fixture with 2 24w bulbs powered by a 2 lamp t5 HO 2x54w ballast meant for 4 foot lamps?? I know i could do it with 2x 2 foot ballasts but it would be way cheaper to get one 2 lamp 4 foot bulb ballast and i wanna know before i order a ballast..

if this is possible im assuming it would be super potent light!!! like close to metal halide maybe?

Thanks for your replies in advance!!!

  2. I also assume this would work using t8 or t12 ballasts. Perhaps using a 8 foot t8 ballast to overdrive a 4 foot fixture?

maybe im totally wrong though! i come up with wild ideas when im stoned.
