Outdoor grow Ireland. Need Advice

Discussion in 'First Time Marijuana Growers' started by Stephen81112, Jan 10, 2013.

  1. Hello, I am thinking about growing weed outdoors in the west of ireland. The climate is very poor (wet, darkish, windy and cold). Could anyone tell me what strain I should use, and what would be the absolute best medium to grow it on? I rather have a reliable and very easy to grow strain that didnt produce alot of weed or thc content, then have a plant that produced alot of thc and weed, but died on me. My goal is to produce 100 grammes of dry weed, and I can plant up to 15 plants to achieve this. Thanks :smoking:

  2. I have used these seeds for the past two years in the yorkshire dales - i love em.

British Outdoor Mix | Buy a Mixture of the Very Best Outdoor Feminised Seeds

Dont set a goal to sharply in your mind - you'l probably be disappointed - growing outdoor in our climate is more of an academic exercise than anything else - unless you have some serious skills.

That being said - this year will be my third outdoor attempt - i've been growing indoor for 4- I plan to plant as many plant as i can - I'am also aiming on about 100 grams dry - but any more is a plus.

  3. sorry noam, Ive said it before in a similar thread and I dont mean to insult you personally, but I recommend not to buy those seeds... the site is a cheap knockoff of the attitude, the seeds are pricey but have no breeder specified at all and the description would fit any kind of weed with the exception of a few unspecific claims. I have no evidence that this site and this seeds are bad, but all the signs are pointing to it and I would definitly not buy that for myself.

either you use bagseed or, if you intend to spend as much money as those seeds cost (or less still), get some from a reputable seedbank and a good breeder.

Im familiar with the problems of outdoor growing in bad climate, I live in northern germany quite close to the north sea, about 55N.
what you need is a strain that first of all flowers fast, so you avoid as much shitty autumn weather as possible, which tends to ruin cannabis with bud rot/mold (botrytis). also to prevent mold, the buds should not be extremely dense. stems need to be stronger than in indoor conditions to withstand strong wind even when they have heavy wet buds on them.
the strain doesnt have to be pure indica, but it definitly needs to be indica-heavy to have fast flowering. some strains are actually bred to be grown outdoors in cold climates and could do better in irish weather than in a hot grow room. 100g from 15 plants is a very low goal, you could definitly pull at least 50g per 1.50m tall plant with the right strain. I wish I had a place to grow 15 plants, I just got a small balcony suitable for autos and some rather bad guerilla spots in mind for this year :/

I wrote a quite detailed review of dutch passion's frisian dew here, also check out the other posts in that thread and other threads in that forum section, youre gonna find that there are many people who have asked the same questions as you and there are others who achieve great results in comparable climates.
frisian dew is a strain that I absolutely recommend for outdoor growing in cold climates. Im sure there are others that do as well as this one if youre lucky to find them, but I doubt there are any that do significantly better. then again, I have only done this one grow and read a lot of shit on the internet.

  4. lol yeah beaumiester doesn't like these seeds - but i've bought all my seeds from rhino and never been disappointed.

Isn't your climate much more moderate than ours beaumeister?

I respect your opinion but i will keep recommending them lol :D

I can tell you know your stuff - but these seeds are brill - i promis.

i would recommend growing some autoflowering strains that finish fast so you can make the most of the season.

Afghan kush ryder is bomb and is supposed to finish in 70 days or less from seed. (wont let me post link)

Type in attitude seeds on google for a good seedbank, but there are many others too.

Grow like 7 of them in good soil. Try to get at least 2 gallon pots(8 liters) per plant But the more the better. Or if you are planting in the ground dig a hole at least 2'2 i would recommend.

  6. dont autos finish in like 80 days? The plants would be minuscule wouldn't they?

  7. Well he said his climate is very poor and a regular strain probably would do worse. It has to be done before the season ends or you can lose everything to mold etc.

Autos will give a much greater chance to walk away with a yield. A regular strain could work but i doubt they would produce much more than an auto in a poor climate. Or you could try both as a test. Just throwing ideas out there.

  8. Wow that sounds like a good plan green711.

I have always stayed away from Auto's as I never really needed em but this is certainly worth exploring.

  9. lowrider is a ridiculously bad strain, if you really want to grow autos, at least try a newer strain. they yield much better. two that Ive read good stuff of would be paradise seeds' pandora and durch passion's automazar.

  10. I concur..

Lowrider was partly the reason for my misconception that all autos are turd.

  11. fellow Irish grower here from cork..you're better of growing autos..im growing afghan kush ryder auto and auto mazar..auto mazar has big yields..heres some tips i found off another member..best of luck..

    SOIL

Choosing a good quality soil will make a huge difference to your plants and will help them to develop to their maximum potential. If you skimp on the soil it WILL show. Plants will not be as healthy or vigorous nor will they grow as big and yield as much. I use Bio-Bizz All mix right from seed. Canna Terra and Fox Farms Ocean Forest are also great soils. Adding a little perlite can help with aeration and drainage.

    WATER

Don't water every day! A lot of people make this mistake. It will slow growth, lower yield significantly and make your plants take longer to finish. Only water when the pot feels light or the top 2 inches of soil are dry. This is usually every 3-5 days.

    POT SIZE

This one is important. The first few weeks of an autoflower's life is spent developing a strong root system which will provide it with the nutrients and water it needs to go through the rapid growth spurt to come. If there is not enough space within those first few weeks, the plant will not develop a big, healthy root system in time and as a result will grow smaller and yield less.
Start in the biggest pots you can. The bigger the better. 5L to 7L is good, 8L+ is best.

    NUTRIENTS

If using a good quality soil like one of the above, start feeding after week 3 from seed. Give only 1/4 strength to begin with. You don't want to overfeed at this stage as this is when the plant begins flowering and goes through a massive growth spurt. Overfeeding will stress the plants and slow down growth considerably. After week 4 increase the nutrients to 1/2 strength and then onto full strength feeding every second watering. If you notice a pale colour to the leaves or the lower leaves beginning to yellow then you need to increase feed at this point. Despite what a lot of people say, some auto's have quite an appetite.

    LIGHT

    HPS

If you can, go with HPS. Do everything you can to go down the HPS route as apposed to CFL. Even a 150W will do wonders if you are only plan on growing 1-2 plants. When growing under HPS light, plants will grow lots of branches because the light is strong enough to penetrate further down the canopy and reach the small branches between the nodes of the plant. These then grow out and become their own little plants, each producing their own colas.

    CFL

CFL's are ok and that's about it. Don't expect much branching or tonnes of bud. Plants will also be smaller and take longer to mature. Keep CFL's as close to the tops as possible, 2-3 inches away or maybe even closer if you can.
When growing under CFL's, plants won't branch as much as the light can't penetrate past a few inches and therefor doesn't reach the lower branches. These stay small and usually stay close to the main stem to form a single cola.

    SUN

If you have nice weather where you live you can just grow them outside. You can get great results depending on weather conditions and how much sun you get. If you get sun all the time, expect BIG plants and BIG yeilds. Don't let plants stay out at night if it's too cold ( under 15C) though as this will slow growth. Monitor buds carefully in the last 2 weeks for bud rot.

    TEMPERATURE, HUMIDITY and AIR CIRCULATION

Don't allow temperatures to exceed 30C (86F) as this will hinder growth. At night, stay above 15C (60F). Humidity can be between 20/50 the entire grow, too high and you could loose your entire crop to bud rot. Make sure you have fresh air circulating in your grow area at all times.

    LIGHT CYCLE

18/6, 20/4 or 24/0? Which one do you choose? That is entirely up to you. There isn't much difference between them. 24/0 will produce slightly shorter plants and about a 5% increase in yield. That's about it. Just remember to give your plants at least 18 hours of light per day for maximum growth and yield.

    STRAINS

Be careful when choosing seeds, especially auto varieties. Do a bit of research on a strain before ordering. There are many new auto strains popping up from different breeders all over the place. Some don't show the auto-flowering trait and will have to be put into 12/12 to induce flowering. This is a pain in the ass so rather go with a tried and tested strain and save yourself the hassle of it all going wrong 3-4 weeks from now.

Here are some strains which I recommend and that have been tried and tested:

Lowlife AK47 - High yield, strong, big plant
Buddha White Dwarf - Strong, beautiful aroma, potent smoke
Lowlife Blueberry - Very tasty, strong, good yield
Dinafem Roadrunner - Strong smoke, good yield, not 100% stable but close
Lowlife White Russian - High yield, strong smoke
Lowlife Hindu Kush - Small, tasty, strong couchlock
Joint Doctor Easy Ryder - Tasty smoke, high yield
Joint Doctor Lowryder - Small, medium strength, low yield, low odour
Joint Doctor Lowryder 2 - Tasty, medium yield, good strength
Joint Doctor Diesel Ryder - Smelly, tasty, small, potent

There are many more, but these are some of the best and most stable.

    TIME FRAME

Ok, so how do you know if you're doing it all right? This time frame should give you an idea of what to expect and when. If your plant is considerably behind what I've put here, then go back and read again.

DAY 1 - First real leaves emerge
DAY 6-7 - Plant has 3 nodes with smaller branches beginning to emerge
    DAY 10-12 - 5 nodes
Day 17-21 - 8 to 10 nodes, plant sex is shown. Very fast growth by this stage.
Day 25-30 - Plant begins flowering and starts to stretch. Bud sites popping up.
Day 35-45 - Growth slows, gets a bit boring, buds slowly develop more and more each day.
Day 50+ - Buds begin to fatten, heavy trichome production and smell. This is the exciting part.
    Day 65-75 - Harvest.

    LST, SCROG, TOPPING & SUPER-CROPPING

Yes, you can LST autos and it works a treat too! Start tying them down after they reach the 5th/6th node. I usually get 12-14 tops with this method. It also doesn't slow growth which is important. SCROG is also a great way to maximise yield. TOPPING and SUPER-CROPPING are big no no's though! There just isn't enough time for the plant to heal and so will actually end up reducing your yield quite a bit.

this is what, you should do..grow a good auto flowering strain that is resistant to mold..germinate seeds indoor and plant them in eleven litre pots..anything more than eleven litres is pointless.don't transplant from small pots to eleven litre pots.it shocks the plant.

grow plants under a cool white cfl grow light,if you can afford it, for two or three weeks, introducing the plants to about one or two hours of natural sunlight a day,to get them used to the sunlight, when you plant them outdoors..just put them on a windowsill or conservatory.the faster you grow autos at the start, the bigger the yield.

after two or three weeks of growth have them planted on the first of may and at the end of June, they should be done..the seed company obviously tells you,how long they take from seed to harvest..make sure you protect the plants from slugs and rabbits etc..if you put copper around the stem, the slugs wont cross it,meaning they wont eat your plants..its give them an electrical discharge or else use slugs pellets..and chicken wire for rabbits..just use your common sense..have clear plastic sheeting over the plants to keep the rain off as well, for mold reasons.

so when you're smoking some nice auto flowering weed, you can be growing photo period plants outdoor somewhere.grow plants indoor, for four to six weeks indoor, to give them a head start in life and have them planted on the first of may.grow strains that are made for our cold and wet climate, that are very resistant to mold and that finish early..

you need strains that do well in our cold wet climate, that have the name purple in it or have been crossed with a purple strain for example Purple #1..purple strains do well in cold climates..examples of strains suited to the Irish climate:

Frisian Dew ® | Dutch Passion

    Hollands Hope® | Dutch Passion

    Shaman ® | Dutch Passion..

just read a lot...to grow weed in Ireland outdoor, you need knowledge, tendor loving care and the right strain and a bit of luck is need as well..best of luck Stephen..

AND DON'T TELL ANYONE THAT YOU'RE GROWING,NOT EVEN YOUR BEST FRIEND..if no one knows you're growing, then you wont get caught, its a simple as that..

there's a head shop in cork called mmad..here is its websites..

  14. Ahoy lads. I'm going to attempt a outdoor grow this year, I was in the same boat as I wasn't sure what strain is most suitable to grow in our horrible weather, so I just purchased the auto flowering outdoor mix from royal queen Autoflowering Outdoor Mix and just see what grows and what doesn't. I have my plot sorted, I'm going to start the germination 1st week of may and get them planted 2nd week of may, I really hope it works out. Peace.

  15. thanks lads 4 all the advice. nyone have any experience with AutoFrisian Dew by dutch passion? think that could be the best option 4 me.
