Odd Gastro Issue... Anyone experience this?

  1. New member here.

I've done quite a bit of research relating to my stomach issues, both as it relates to pot and separately. I have found nothing conclusive so far, so I'm going to hope someone else out there has experienced this.

Often when I smoke, I feel a little bloated afterwards. But the real problems begin when I eat before or after getting high, and due to the munchies, its often tough to avoid. Best I can describe it is that it feels like gastroparesis. Either my stomach lining is getting agitated, or food is simply not being digested properly after smoking, I'm not really 100% sure. I will be very bloated for a few days after this happens (even in my face), and quite often experience constipation in the process. Bowel movements after this occurs bring some relief, but doesn't entirely fix things.

I've seen doctors regarding this. My family doctor gave me some drugs to try and improve stomach motility (doperimone I believe) and those did not work. Eventually I saw a gastro specialist. He was young, and after telling him I smoke weed, he figured it was just a negative reaction like an allergy. But he did absolutely no tests.

I've taken things such as Apple Cider Vinegar in order to manipulate stomach acid levels. I've taken fibre and magnesium supplements and laxatives in order to force bowel movements faster. I've recently began taking Deglycchizinated Licorice Root and L-Glutamine to improve general stomach health. I also recently began giving myself Iodine droplets in case the problem is hypothyroidism.

The obvious solution is to stop smoking weed. But I've smoked it for over a decade daily, so if this option can be avoided, that'd be great. Has anyone seen or heard of this before?

  2. You can ask for a gastric-emptying test to see if you have gastroparesis on some level. You eat oatmeal or other food with radioactive stuff and lay in a machine for an hour while they see how much food your body digests.

I have gastroparesis and it went undiagnosed for about a year. Then they did the test while I was in the hospital (Had been in and out for months.) and BAM we had an answer. I smoked weed before I got GP and quit because they told me too. I tried this several times, the longest I went without was 3 months. This made things much worse and I was in the hospital more. :(

So now I smoke every 2 to 4 hours and take omeprazole, ondansetron, and methocarbamol regularly and sparingly oxycodone. I too use over the counter drugs to help me have a bowel movement or stop diarrhea. On top of that I also take tums and liquid acid reducers for frequent heartburn. I follow a diet plan that also helps cut down on vomiting. This gets me to a place where I dont have to just slouch in bed but I can get up and sit to watch TV or get on the PC, but if I move around a lot the nausea and pain come back.

My best advice.... Get a notebook and document everything you put into your body and everything that comes out, how much and when. After a week I would look at what you are doing then tweak anything you want to and see what happens. You can also take these findings to a Dr to help support your claims. Even if you don't have gastroparesis there are other things like IBS that could be going on that they can figure out from your notes.

    Good Luck :)

  3. Thanks for the reply Rhapsody4559.

How does smoking effect your gastroparesis, or does it at all? Why have you found that it helps to smoke it often regardless of what the doctors told you? See, the more severe symptoms of gastroparesis such as vomiting is non-existent in my case. I've been to the hospital and did some form of a gastric emptying test, however I only drank some radioactive milk (containing Barium, I believe). The doctors watched the barium do exactly as it should - everything appeared normal. However it could be a different result if I was high and ate actual food? In any case, thank you for your advice. I'll look into getting a different gastric emptying test.

  4. The weed takes my nausea and pain level down along with the ondansetron and usually a methocarbamol or oxy if it is really bad. if I didn't smoke I would need to take phenergan and maybe another nausea drug like belladonna and my insurance wont pay for the belladonna or enough other meds to get to the end of the month. When I don't have enough meds I smoke only and try to get by but even then sometimes I end up in the ER because I cant stop vomiting. I need it because it works with the ondansetron to bring the nausea down so I can drink water or eventually eat something easy to digest. otherwise I am to sick to move or eat or drink and often vomit uncontrollably. I start to think death would be better.

The dr says it isn't helping my motility but neither is having to take oxycodone all day for the pain. if I smoke I take WAY less oxycodone and about half as much ondansetron.

Anyway I think you and I had two different tests. I had to eat radioactive oatmeal.

  5. The vinegar is not necessary. The supplements are also an alternative to having a proper diet and could contribute to your feelings of being bloated since they take longer to digest.

Of course I would recommend halting your marijuana use... however, this isn't something you wanted to hear so I will continue with an alternative.

Try introducing a diet with a high amount in vegetables and piece of fruit every meal. Eat these first since the longer these sit in your stomach the chances of being bloated will increase.

Always drink an adequate amount of water and avoid soda. This keeps the pH of your stomach as neutral as possible which will reduce the fore-mentioned occurrences.

Sorry if I can't offer any more advice. I hope you find a solution,

  6. Hey! Have you ever tried digestive enzymes? Seriously take a look into them.

Everything you need to know about digestive enzymes.

That's a good site, or if not just a quick google search. They are sold at health food stores. Cheap too. I have had GI issues for many years and I discovered these babies about 3-4 months ago and man do they help.

  7. My stomach lining has felt dry at times. I'm sorry if this isn't even close to your problem. But I have to eat leafy greens with every meal, and lower my meat consumption dramatically. That allows me to eat fatty meats in general. Like skinless chicken thighs, and such. Fat can be good. Homemade chicken soup? Bread, and carbs are pretty bad. Regular tap water is also an irritant to me. Like. There's a difference between arrowhead water, and Sierra springs. Eating smaller meals more frequently works for me. If I didn't do that. My dr said to drink metamucil before meals, and maalox after. It gave me a neutral awareness of my body. Cranberry juice makes me pee a lot, and sometimes. I hate getting out of bed, but I usually eat a piece of fruit on my front steps like a kid. Sorry if I'm way off bases? Just trying to help.

Look up cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome...It took me forever to find out what was wrong with me sounds like you may be in a similar boat. Especially since you smoked daily for nearly a decade, it only occurs with chronic use of cannabis over long periods of time. It started happening. To me after about a year and a half of heavy daily use

  10. It might be water retention as well.

  11. Sometimes you're kidneys can be damaged. Due to a dramatic potassium level in either direction. People with high blood pressure can experience this more commonly because of medication. The position of you're internal organs may be confusing. Example being. Over eating, and getting heart burn. Well? You're left kidney. May be below you're stomach, and off to the side like mine. One of my other thoughts is that the plant nutrients themselves maybe adding something extra. Throwing you're body out of wack.

I have eating disorders too. Something similar to gastroparesis. I rushed to the doctor and he prescribed me aciphex pills. I quitted smoking for a while (I had to). I am still waiting till my health come to normal.:(

  13. A year and a half later and I'm still experimenting with possible solutions.

For those who have mentioned water retention, that is definitely what is going on. When I tell doctors that I'm retaining water in my face, they often look a bit puzzled. Even drinking water seems to add to it. I believe a bit of malabsorption is happening. Over time I've also developed a white coated tongue, a dry mouth in the mornings and quite a bit of hoarseness in my voice. I get cold hands all the time when I used to never experience such things.

I've previously looked into many of the suggestions other users have brought up. In my experiance a hot shower doesn't relieve any symptoms, so I didn't think much of the hypermesis syndrome. I've been using digestive enzymes and HCL supplements in an experiment; assuming my stomach acid has been sapped by the smoke (or something).

Posting an update here again is pretty much my last ditch attempt to hear any other ideas.
    Thanks everyone.

It’s important to pay attention to whether or not cannabis makes this condition better or worse. Popular belief has it that acid reflux and heartburn are caused by high levels of stomach acid. If this is the case, then there is evidence that cannabis may help.

However, some experts suggest that low stomach acid and too much abdominal pressure may actually be the underlying issue. With low stomach acid, it’s possible that cannabis may aggravate the issue.

Hope u got an answer, but if not try to contact 1-pills.com | RX Discount Coupons You can find more information and recommendations. Good Luck!
