I've only used wood besides friends glass pieces. Don't treat the bowl with anything and don't scrape it after a smoke session. It'll build up a thin 1/32" layer of soot that will protect the pipe. Don't resin toke or hold the lighter on the pipe for too long you'll just end up burning off the soot and shortening the life of your pipe.
