So my girlfriend was watching TV last night and turns to this show on MSNBC called To Catch A Predator and what they do is they have someone pretend to be a 13 or 14 year old girl or boy and they lure people in to come to their house and they are greeted by this middle aged guy who then confronts them about what they just chatted about and why they did so while the police are outside ready to book them for conspiring to have sex with an underage person (I guess that's the charge, I'm not quite sure though.) Anyways, I'm confused about this show because if they are acting like they are little kids and CONSENTING and WANTING to meet these guys - what is the problem? The only problem I see with someone 18+ having sex with a minor is if they are forcing themselves upon the minor and basically raping them. But if they are consenting, ummmm - why are these people going to jail? Now don't get me wrong, I think it's pretty odd and weird for a 40 year old to be fucking around with a 13 year old ... but what about an 18 year old and a 14 year old or something similar? I mean it's THEIR body, they can do what they want with it. I knew girls that by the age of 13 were FULLY developed, so unless they are getting raped - I don't get why these men are going to jail. Can some offer a different point of view/perspective for me? I mean when I was 13, I would have LOVED to have had sex with some of my teachers and they were like at least 25+ ... if I would have had sex with them I don't think I would have felt like I was abused or taken advantage of afterwards unless I was ACTUALLY abused or forced to do something against my will. I'm not advocating having sex with minors, but I think luring these men to the house and tricking them and acting like they are little kids while teasing these guys is just kinda fucking evil and lame. I mean, who the fuck is to say at what age you are allowed to start experimenting with your body? If a 13 year old girl WANTS to have sex with a guy that is over 18, then that is HER business and no one else's, see what I'm saying?
Mainly because minors are more naive and don't actually think through what they are getting themselves into. This also makes it easier for the 18+(or40+) offender to manipulate the situation to their liking. Most youngins will listen to someone that's older because that was what they were taught when they grew up, "Listen to your elders". Plus it's the law, so, they(the offenders) obviously know they are breaking it, but doing it anyways. Also, the newest "season" of to catch a predator has caught so many people that ADMIT to seeing the show prior to committing the offense,so it's also their moron call to still try and hook up with these young girls.

whether the supposed "kids" consent or not to have sex with Joe Pedophile, they are still under the legal age of consent in their state, which makes it a crime. in most states its 17 or 18, some its 16 (im looking at you montana you child lovers). a minor cant be expected to make reasonable decisions in their own best interest as required by law
I know it's the law, but look how retarded the laws are i.e. marijuana being illegal. I mean, I smoked cannabis for the first time when I was 14 - are you saying I had no idea what I was doing because I had no control over my body and mind? I just think that each person has the right to do what they want with their body and mind ... DEFINITELY before the age of 18. Like in Canada, the legal age of consent is 14 - that makes a helluva lot more sense to me than 18. EDIT: And another thing is each situation is going to be different. I'm sure there are some 13-14 year old out there that are JUST as mature as 18 year olds that want to explore their body with an older more experienced man and so if the minor is LOOKING for this older man (which in this show that appears to be the case) I don't get why the older guy deserves to be in jail. EDIT NUMBA 2: Do they actually take these guys to jail, or is them being shown on TV enough punishment cuz I'm not exactly sure what they do with them afterwards. All I'm saying is, this show seems like an invasion of privacy and they seem to be egging these men on by acting like they WANT the older man to come over. I just think that the age of 13-14 is somewhere in that grey area where it's KIND OF wrong to be doing, but it's KIND OF not at the same time. I mean, I knew a lot of girls in highschool that when they were 14 were going out with guys in their 20's.
Some laws are stupid (marijuana laws) and some are not (child sex laws), I mean how would you feel if you found out that your 10-13yearold daughter was meeting up with a 35 yearold dude AT YOUR HOUSE and having sex with him AT YOUR HOUSE. I know I would be devastated aswell as rip shit. EDIT: In this show the predators are the ones who go into these "young" chat rooms posed as children and have sex strictly on their mind. Well that sounds more justified, I was under the impression that the supposed 13-14 year old girls were the ones that were approaching the predator type people. I do think it's fucking odd that anyone over 20 would want anything to do sexually with a 13 or 14 year old girl ... but I think when it comes down to like guys that are just over 18 having sex with underage girls this should be treated A LOT differently. I don't think there is really an across the board solution to everything because each situation is going to be different. Basically what I'm trying to say is, if two people are wanting to get together and fuck - I don't see why one of them should go to jail unless someone is being forced to do something they don't want to.

I agree with you about the just over 18 situation, if a dude who is 18 or 19 is hooking up with a 17 or 16 year old, maybe even 15, but it's a push, I wouldn't see a problem. When it gets into younger than 15 then it should be punished.

I think it's entrapment, and I think that if the sexual activity is consensual, then it's the young person's dumb mistake, and they should have to live with any emotional consequences that stem from that. Nobody has a right to interfere with any consensual activity. In Indiana, however, the age of sexual consent is 14, so long as there's a maximum 3 year age difference between the two parties... For example 14-17, 15-18, 16-19, 17-20, and by then you've reached unconditional sexual consent I assume.
Medicine teaches us that. That's why it's globally accepted as the age of entrance into adulthood. Your psyche is not play-doh anymore, you can make rational decisions and act civilized. Ofcourse there's exceptions.. I've been around 18 year olds since I was 14, so I'm really on your side but sadly there's some exceptions on the other side too, that's why it's 18. Seems pretty reasonable to me, especially since you can drive earlier..
