Marijuana Should be Legalized

Discussion in 'Marijuana Legalization' started by damr07, Mar 19, 2014.

  1. Marijuana is a very controversial topic in the United States and it is currently a topic that is being discussed in the media more and more. With this in mind marijuana is illegalized in the United States, however marijuana should be legalized because it offers many benefits including the fact that the United States could use it as a taxable crop (like tobacco).
Marijuana has many aspects to it and is socially thought of as a bad substance, and the only way that it is being used (on somewhat legal terms) in the United States is in the fact that you can use it for certain medical ailments to help with chronic pains like you would experience in cancer or you can use it if you have glaucoma. Now the fact that this is “legal” is arguable, and the reasoning for this is because even if a state has legalized medical marijuana you can still be fined or even jailed for the possession of the substance. It has to do with how the rules of the United States are written and its jurisdiction laws. If you travel from a state that has legalized medical marijuana into a state that it is not legalized in it becomes an illegal substance and you could be fined or jailed depending on the amount you have and the laws that the state within have towards possession. In a state where medical marijuana is legalized you can even still be arrested by certain government agencies. If it is legalized in the state you are guaranteed amnesty from city, county, and state police, but since marijuana is an illegalized substance under federal laws if a federal agent were to find you in possession of the substance you can still be fined or jailed based on the fact that the federal agent is the one that finds you in possession. This creates a problem because a lot of states have begun legalizing medical marijuana and some even legalizing the substance completely like Colorado, and in these states if a federal investigation were to take place (because normally federal agents are not going to be patrolling the streets), even if the investigation is not on the person in possession, and the person is found to be in possession they can receive punishment for an act that they were under the impression of being lawful.
Not only is it hard for people to understand whether or not it is lawful the law should not be in place. Federal laws are only supposed to be on topics that affect the safety and wellbeing of the public within it here in the United States. Marijuana under federal law is a substance that is illegal but is wrongfully illegalized because of the fact that is should not be a federal law if anything it should fall under state law. Reason for this being is the fact that alcohol in the 1920's was prohibited (hence the prohibition) and for this same reason they allowed alcohol to be legalized, or at least certain alcohols became legal again. Marijuana is less toxic to the body than alcohol is. The only problem marijuana (that isn't laced with other drugs) is that it can affect the brain and leave the person in a coma, but only if consumed in very large amounts in a short amount of time. The same thing can occur with alcohol, but you have to consume a much lesser amount and as soon as you drink even a sip of alcohol within 90 seconds of consuming it, it travels through the bloodstream and into the brain killing brain cells and effecting judgment. Marijuana does not have this effect on the brain, and it also does not destroy the liver like alcohol does. The worst damage to the body that marijuana does is to the lungs with the possibility of cancer, but tobacco does the same thing and it is legalized.
On the topic of tobacco it is a product legalized in the United States that also has worse effects on the human body than that of marijuana, and it is a taxed crop allowing money to be made off of it for the government itself. Marijuana if legalized can do the same for the United States and the government could use this to help with the immense amount of debt that the United States is in, or they could spend it on things like every other tax dollar that they have.
All in all marijuana is a crop that has effects that are lesser than that of alcohol and tobacco and yet it is an illegalized product. It would be beneficial for the United States to legalize it overall and then tax it and they could make more money off of it than they spend on fighting it in the current times.

I read what you wrote. cannabis can be put in a better light than you let on- the part about cancer is not correct. cannabis has no connection with causing cancer, in fact the health benefits of cannabis help reduce cancer and other common diseases. there are so many uses for it that it would only take a blind prohibitionists to not see them...
