Marijuana Induced Psychosis: Mild/Severe Auditory Hallucinations Question.

Discussion in 'Marijuana Consumption Q&A' started by MrAverage, Aug 9, 2012.

  1. My best guess would be that you have schizophrenia, but hey I'm no doctor. Ask your parents if there is a history of schizophrenia in the family or something

I was a heavy daily smoker for some time and went into serious psychosis. Had mad delusions, paranoid like I was going to die any minute, mild hallucinations (auditive and visual). Anyways, I had to be locked up in the psych ward for 2 weeks. I was diagnosed with drug-induced psychosis along with depression ( i only smoked cannabis and drank alcohol). I recovered well with the help of antipsychotics. It has been a little over a year the incident happened and i have searched a lot on the subject . I also questionned my psychiatrist and psychologist for answers.

First, having a psychosis triggered by any drug does not mean you have a mental illness such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. Some people, are more sensitive to the effects of drugs such as marijuana. Therefore I recommend you take your prescribed medication, especially if you want to toke occasionnaly. Because yes I consider it safe to smoke up moderately (i suggest taking atleast a 2 months break of cannabis, which will allow your medication to fully work). Beware, once you've experienced psychosis even if mild, you are more prone to experience it again. They should prescribe you with antipsychotics (in your case risperidone) for a few months, and gradually take it off if everything goes well.

I also suggest you keep a close attention to symptoms of schizophrenia or bipolar or even depression, because your pot smoking could have revealed an underlying mental illness.

Relax, take a t-break and be careful not to smoke so much from now on. ;)

  3. I want some weed that strong. Goddamn. I'm jealous. You should have asked the voices if they wanted a hit. That's probably why they were harsh.

  4. I think you panicked bro. Sounds like you would have been fine if you'd just stopped smoking. Then you could have avoided all that hospital shit.

If I were you, I'd lay off the weed for a while and make sure I'm getting enough sleep. Also get some cardio exercise (running, biking, etc.). Do it enough and you will get a feeling of well-being.

Meanwhile, explain the situation to your shrinks and work with them to wean you off those meds you probably don't need.

I can't say if you should try smoking again, but if you do: 1) definitely go for a different batch and 1) Just smoke a little until you know how powerful it is 2) Stop immediately if the voices come back, and consider if maybe pot is just not for you.

  5. There is also a difference between panicking and psychosis. Psychiatrists are the best qualified for a diagnosis. I'd follow their recommandations. antipsychotics aren't really that bad, especially when taken in low doses (1mg is pretty low for risperidone). Weaning off to early could be dangerous for relapse. You may not NEED antipsychotics, but you are sure are safer taking them.

I'd trust a specialised mental health doctor more than any fellow forum members on that subject.

  6. This sounds awesome.

  7. I GET THIS TOO!!!! usually happens when im super stoned, but i guess its valid because i have parents home so them coming in and yelling at me is always a possibility because i was probably too out of it to pay attention. Everytime i hear it i literally turn into a dog, turning my head and stopping to hear if there are actually sounds. It scared me so much the first time i heard it, but i knew no one was screaming or banging on the door so i just assured myself.
