Don't get me wrong, I think it is both silly and wrong to classify something like this as a disorder, I just don't yet think it is time to say that they are trying to classify being a libertarian as mental disorder. In the future this may be the case, but nothing leads me to believe this now.

I don't really feel like I am reaching here even the MSM has warned that they are abusing their power. And ODD is not just a diagnosis for kids, adults are diagnosed all the time.

The problem, of course, is that the diagnosis of mental illness, while a legitimate concern for some Americans, has over time become a convenient means by which to penalize certain "unacceptable" social behaviors. Most recently, we have witnessed the pathologizing of individuals who resist authority as suffering from oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), defined as "a pattern of disobedient, hostile, and defiant behavior toward authority figures."

Under such a definition, every activist of note throughout our history -- from Mahatma Gandhi to Martin Luther King Jr. -- could be classified as suffering from an ODD mental disorder. Yet psychologist Bruce Levine, who has studied the issue of dissent and mental illness, suggests that the problem may have less to do with any true illness on the part of the anti-authoritarians than it does with those in field of psychology and psychiatry who are pre-disposed to labeling anti-authoritarians as mentally ill. Says Levine:

In my career as a psychologist, I have talked with hundreds of people previously diagnosed by other professionals with oppositional defiant disorder, attention deficit hyperactive disorder, anxiety disorder and other psychiatric illnesses, and I am struck by how many of those diagnosed are essentially anti-authoritarians, and how those professionals who have diagnosed them are not.

I was studying Psychology at University for about 2 years. One of my profs said the DSM's main use is for insurance purposes. Insurance companies won't just insure your visit to a psychologist for any reason. It has to be a "documented" disorder. But of course if they really are desperate for a label there are alot of general disorders in the DSM that could be applied to anything. Take generalized anxiety disorder for example. If you feel anxious in a certain situation they will just call it something like sitatuation specific anxiety disorder.
