The Chinese are building Aircraft carriers as we speak, and as in little of two years, could arm North Korea with Carrier capabilities. all they're missing is some more modern day avionics. an easy retrofit if they had a desire to go to war. China is already building the ships, the only thing thats gonna change if the US leaves is North Korea will have a reason to want to buy one.

technicly, no, japan does not have a millitary. They are allowed by the terms set at the end of WWII to have a defense force, but it's not what you'd think of when you think of a modern day millitary. And we care about South Korea because the war's not over there.
Good. They have self-defense forces. Let them take care of themselves. If you want to get technical it was never a declared war. It is a "police action" mandated by the UN in 1950. As such it is unconstitutional. However, that is besides the point. I think it's time that the "war" end. Let South Korea handle it themselves. There is no benefit from spending billions of dollars maintaining a military presence there.

Having lived in Okinawa for 10 years this debate has been going on ever since I got there. The many rapes, violence, and thefts from American servicemen and their dependents don't help with argument either. It only fuels them the want us out of there even sooner. From what I understand the Marine Corps has the highest military presence in Okinawa, and at the moment they are trying to relocate them to Guam.

the cost of operation just one small carrier like the ones spain has is enormous. now a fully loaded carrier is what? $3,500,000. it takes that much money to keep a aircraft carrier the size of "el principe de austrias" up and running for just ONE week. now multyply $3,500,000 by the 54 weeks there is in a year, and you have a gran total of $189,000,000 PER YEAR to operate a aircraft carrier of the smallest size. and thats just for the carrier to be running. if you put into account the supplys for the personnel on the carrier, the fuel for the aircraft, the amunition. the costs is nearly doubled. if nortk korea really did try to buy a aircraft carrier they would logically have to buy aircraft suitable for a carrier. MIG-21's wont fly off a carrier so well. so basically, north korea cant afford more than it already has.
Nobody has mentioned how North Korea launched test missiles into the Sea of Japan which caused a huge scare in Japan. So from these incidents the North Koreans do have weapons or at least have the capability of developing weapons that can cause mass panic in this region of the world.
