Im only growing one plant. help?

  1. I live alone in an apartment and I'm wanting to do this more as a project or experiment rather then having an actual grow.

I have like 6 seeds I've picked from bags i've gotten over time. I have zero experience with growing, but if I planted them in a plastic cup with soil and watered it would I ever see results? If I germinate the seeds, would this do anything?

I'd keep it in my closet btw. Does anyone have any thoughts or feedback on this idea? Keep in mind I dont want much, just doing it as a fun project and if I get a couple grams out of it well that is just an awesome perk, but its fine if it fails.

  2. First things first, if you're in an apartment you absolutely NEED odor control such as a carbon filter. Yes, even with one plant.

  3. The first thing anyone here will tell you is you should READ a lot about the process of growing.  There are plenty of guides and stickies here.  Next, you may want to consider cost when your "project" becomes an addiction (like most good growers) or an epic money pit (fail growers unite!).  There's more to it than a cup and an incandescent bulb in the closet to grow even a couple grams of horrible weed.  Take your time, do some research and come back with specific questions before you get flamed for being a lazy n00b!

    G/L! :bongin:

  4. It's a bit of a long-term project to grow 1 small plant out of curiosity, but it's doable.  A plastic up would do for germinating the seeds but not really for growing.  One plant with less than 100 watts of CFLs (3-4 household bulbs) will smell but not toooo bad, if it was in a closet in your bedroom then a plug-in air freshener in your main living area might cover it up for guests but people going in your room would probably notice you're either smoking or growing it.  Also, some plants fucking stink, but some don't, so it depends on the strain.

Assuming you get a female, you veg it for 4-6 weeks then flower it, you're looking at something like 4-5 months minimum to go from seeds to harvest, and all things going well a yield between 2-10 grams.  Not a great return for your time!  But an interesting learning experience.

There's lots of info here and elsewhere on the internet.   Check the posts and stickies on the indoor and micro-grow forums for tips and ideas.  If you are keen then you can start to germinate the seeds before you get anything setup, but do have a plan of what you're going to do at least before you germinate them.

    For some throw-away advice:
     - think about how you're going to include a fan in your closet
     - extraction fans are good, but for small CFL grows just a small fan in the closet is often adequate unless temps are high
     - use CFLs, at least 70 watts of actual power not equivalent (e.g. 3x 23w bulbs is the absolute minimum, usually people say 100w minimum)
     - You'll need a pot and some soil.  Multi-purpose will do, but you probably need to mix in some perlite or vermiculite to improve the drainage.  It doesn't need to be FoxFarm, but try to avoid MiracleGrow if you can.
     - read about training techniques: LST, topping, FIM, Scrog, and try one.  You don't have to be elaborate, but at least top it once or it's a wasted opportunity.

Many people will tell you this is a foolhardy adventure and a waste of time.  It's not, but it is a bit dubious.  There is a lot to learn by actually growing a real plant for yourself, even if it's a list of "what not to do".

    Good Luck, and Have Fun!

  5. Of course! That's how I germinate my seeds. Leftover beerpong cups! Make sure its clean though. xD
LSP's (lone seed projects) are always fun and insightful.
If this is your first time growing, its a perfect way to learn what the plant does during its life, so you know what to expect when you need to take care of multiple plants in various stages of life.

Now, the first thing you wanna do is make sure you won't get busted. You wouldn't want your effort to be in vain, let alone get in trouble with the law.. Keep in mind your state laws and legal system when it comes to cannabis!

With that squared away, if your worried about odor, a carbon filter isn't exactly mandatory...
Like previously stated, some plants don't stink that bad, whereas others just STANK.
Depending on what ya end up with, adapt as best you can! Air fresheners through the place isn't a bad idea at all, especially with only one plant. If that's not enough, improvise with burning some incense! A great idea before guests come too. ;D

Now for the grunt work. If your gonna use soil, do some research on which potting soils are good for cannabis. I mean, they all work, but some are better than others.
I prefer the Miracle Gro Moisture Control  Potting Mix. Regardless of what anyone says... This is an amazing soil medium for cannabis. It LOVES it. I myself use a 50/50 mix of the Miracle Gro and my own home made organic compost. I've never ever seen a sad plant using this product, even without compost.

As far as water, use tap water! Why the hell would you go and spend money on fertz and nutez for only one plant? Some people swear by always PH'ing the water and using some sort of fert. Or only using rainwater. Not necessary at all. A cannabis plant can thrive perfectly with only tap water its entire life. How do I know? I do the same thing. I rarely ever PH or add nutrition to my crop. And I've still to this day never experienced a sad plant or yield! :3

You will need bigger pots. The cup is fine for starting out, but you'll still want at least a one gallon pot. I'd ramp it up to a 5 gallon bucket. Not much bigger, but totally worth the results. Trust me. xD
Lights? CFL's and florescent lights are your best options. They would be your best bang for your buck, however if you do have some cash to throw around, and if you decide to continue growing, I'd check out some LED's. If you decide to go the CFL/fluorescent route, use a mix of Soft White, and Daylight bulbs. Some people say one is better for flower, and one is better for veg, so a mix of the two should do well for its entire life!

*IMPORTANT*   Light from CFL's don't penetrate the canopy of your plants that well, so be sure to keep them close to your plant and have them all around so the entire plant gets light. They don't burn too hot at all, so a good 3-4 inches away is totally safe. 5 to be sure. xD

Oh, a timer for your lights would help out a ton, I'd get one if I were you.
You can chose to start your babies off with 24-hrs of light, or you can do an 18-6 day/night cycle. When you wanna flower them, ease them into budding by taking an hour of daylight away from them and adding one hour more of night until your timer is set to 12-12. I don't like swapping it right to 12-12 because losing that much light that fast is pretty harsh on any plant.

I hope I helped out a bunch, but if there is something I didn't cover, I'm sure someone else has in the indoor or micro grow sections! Growing your own cannabis should be a fun and rewarding experience for everyone! And this website and forums has a myriad of other sources! So if you have more questions, poke around a bit and use your best judgement. ;D Good luck to ya!

P.S. Yes, I have pics of past crops if you'd like to see. xD

  6. Would love to see some pics once you have it setup as well!

  7. Good decision to only grow one plant. So often there are rookies that try to take on 6-8 plants at once and then give up when they fail. A single plant lets you focus and hone in your growing skill more effectively. It becomes easier to notice subtle changes because you spend hours looking at this one specimen.

What I'm going to do is put down some things you can type into google and research yourself. You could even search all of this stuff in this forum.

I always enjoy helping out newbies, because people on this forum more then helped me through my first grow years ago. If you have any questions don't be afraid to ask.

  8. Are you trying to grow all of the seeds in one cup? For some reason the way you wrote this made me feel like you might be trying to put all six in the same cup..

  9. Finally! Somebody I don't have to make fun of lol. There is a thread on GC somewhere, they had a solo beer cup/CFL lighting competition with pics. Some growers used MG in a cardboard box lined with foil. And they got them to flower!!!!! Amazing, but true. They did it all for fun, the same way you are. Good luck with your grow. If they flower, by all means brag about it and post pics. I wanna see. Thanks!  :)

  10. Hooray! Something i can agree with!! Thanks!  :)

  11. Amen! Out of many great gardens I have only used tap water. It is like the adapt to what you are feeding them. Resilient little girls

  12. Based on what most people say when they reply to thread, usually saying "you should get a 600w HPS mate, and a tent while you're at it, some organic soil, otherwise you're gonna get airy buds and shit"....  this actually sounds amazing!  I'm an advocate of the fact that you don't need all that stuff to grow enough weed to smoke yourself (although it can help), but if there's actually a "grow it in a solo cup" thread.... I might have to join in!
    Sweeeet.

  13. Yea, 6 seeds 1 cup is a bad porno.

On a serious note, OP please read the beginner stickies. Maybe you can turn your little project into a new passion.

  14. I have never once had airy buds from CFL grows. Just saying.

  15. Me neither.  They must be doing it wrong!  Doesn't stop'em saying it though.

  16.
This isn't an ACTUAL GROW?   ;)   Give yourself a little credit.

I started out the same way when I was starting back in March, and finally figured it out by the last week of May.  She's in flower now.  CFL's work fine, as has been said.   :)

Had I read the stickies, I would have saved myself a lot of time, money, and frustration.

BTW, I've only every germinated in damp paper towels in a zip lock in a desk drawer.  24 hrs later they've sprouted and are ready to plant.  You'll find many methods work - even just dropping them right into the ground.

^^^^ That is the gospel, @[member="Dynamics"], the gospel.  If you don't know what strain you're growing, you can't take a chance.  Some start stinking by the 2nd or 3rd weeks.

^^^^ That is the gospel, @[member="Dynamics"], the gospel.   :D

And yeah, focus of the FUN part.  It really is amazing once you start seeing the little white hairs appear from nowhere, then small popcorn buds growing, then big nugs start forming... it is so cool.

Yep!  Stinky stinky stank stank!  If you're anywhere NEAR someone that could/would bust you, they will smell it - and I can't stress this enough.  It depends on the strain - and the unknown strain is a motherfucker!

I am growing two - a Kerala Krush and a Mazar i Sarif x White Rhino.  The Krush has no odor.  None.  Zero.  I'll swear to anything you'd like me too.  The Mazar/Rhino REEKS!  I can't describe it in words.  It is unreal.  I have an 18" x 8" carbon filter inside the tent.  Outside the tent I have a Holmes whole room 16" HEPA air purifier, and an ONA Breeze with ONA PRO gel. I needed all this to control just that plants' odor.

As for water - tap water, huh?  WTF?  I've been feeding my babies distilled water (at .89 cents a gallon, mind you, and I've bought at least 40+) and using General Hydro's pH UP & DOWN to get it around 6.9-7.1 range before feeding.  All on the advice I've gotten, or seen, from here.  I can use tap water???  If that's true, I am soooooo pissed right now.  What about the "impurities" in the water and the chlorine, etc.??

What?? Tap water??  Wait, you too.....

Ok, sorry to add this long post to your thread, OP, but my MIND = BLOWN.

Here on grasscity:  Tap water works just fine; you must use RO/distilled. Runoff doesn't matter; runoff MUST be 6.5.  Water has to be pH'ed to XYZ; in going pH doesn't matter.

Guys, if I only need to be using tap water, let's take this to another thread, because I'm hyperventilating!!

  17. Here in Spain I just use tap water, but I am not in the town I live in the campo so I have what is called "agricultural water" basically it comes from a big reservior and I just use that.

  18. What, you didn't believe me?

  19.
    About?

  20. Tap water all the way!! If you haven't died from drinking it yet, why would your plant??
