How to tell if my plants need water.

Discussion in 'First Time Marijuana Growers' started by Liom21, Aug 11, 2019.

  1. So I have them in a 1.5 thin plastic pot with a thousand light with fan and fan. I water them half a gallon and let most of it run off and water them 3-4 days but worried of root rot and thinking of doing it every week. Please need feed back, thank you.

  2. Weed likes to get real thirsty before its to be watered. With that said I wouldn't go more than five days, I water every 3 days in 3.5 gallon pots. If you're worried, just let it go another day . The best way to tell is, lift the pot when it's just watered, try to remember how heavy it is, so when you lift it 3 days later, it will feel light as a feather and you'll know it needs water.

  3. I agree that the best way to tell if they need watering is by weight. Pay close attention to the weight after watering. As far as how often you need to water, that depends a lot on what stage your plants are at. Seedlings, especially in the first week, do not need much water. As in watering until you have water coming out of the bottom of pot. Soon after they sprout, they need to search out water with their roots. If there’s water everywhere, the roots will grow slower because they don’t have to look very far. Unlike during flowering, especially late flowering, you’ll need to water a lot mite often. I often water every other day during late flowering. During seedling and veg stage, their needs are smaller for how much water or nutes are need. That’s why it’s best to judge by the weight of the pot. And they recover a lot faster than overwatering as long as it’s not too often or for a long time. Overwatering can cause many problems.

  4. If they sit in puddles then root rot would be an issue , if you get at least 20% or more run off then you shouldn't have any worries of root rot

  5. I dont know if this is true as I've never tested it......but either way, be cautious beginners......that statement doesn't mean you can water say........everyday with 20% runoff and not run into overwatering issues....just my .02

  7. Yeah i should have mentioned i water every other day or by the knuckle deep rule or weight of the pot .
I use very heavy drainage soil mix with pearlite and hydroton
So when i water say a gallon in a 2-5 gal pot i usually get 20% run off or more .

When my plants are small i keep the amount of water minuscule
In the first 4 weeks i use 1 or 2 12oz bottle to water every other day then i move up bottle sizes
Up to 50 oz then on to 64 oz then (1/2gal)
    Then 1 gal full
I won't start getting run off until I'm using full gallons
    Crazy watering habits but
    Every other day
    (M)Water , (W)feed , (F)water ,(Su) feed
    full week cycle
    Works good for me
    With water less is more
