How to germinate?

Discussion in 'First Time Marijuana Growers' started by soapshoedude, Sep 1, 2016.

  1. About to start first grow with white widow auto fem. Im growing with a 30 gal bubbler system with rock wool. I've been told just to plant the seeds in the rock wool and let them do there thing. But then there's also the soaking in a cup of water, and the paper towel thing... And I'm not sure which method to use. Does it matter?

  2. I have always used the soak and towel method and I have had 100% success with that

  3. best way is in a wet paper towel but put it between 2 plates an keep it in a dark place check on it between 3-5 days, dunno why ive had best results this way

  4. Does the wet paper towel have to be pH'd properly ?

  5. The best way to germinate is put the seed in between wet (not soaking) paper towel on top of a plate then use another plate to cover it. It will usually take 48 hours to put out root. I use this method every time and have always had successful results.

  6. I always use filtered water to do this but you can use tap water as long as it's not too high in chlorine. Let the water sit for 24 hours if you use tap water. I have never PH'd for germination by the way and have never had any issues.

  7. Awesome info thank you.

  8. No problem. Here is some extra info on autoflowering cannabis in general. It is a brilliant guide which I found posted by a very experienced auto-grower and breeder. I take no credit but it's a great article to share on with new growers! Give it a good read!

    LIFECYCLE OF AN AUTO

A common question I see is when to switch autos from veg to bloom. Many people are under the impression that as soon as they see the first flowers it's time to switch. Perhaps a little explanation of the life cycle of autos will help to clarify this.

Weeks 1 - 3. Once you've started your seeds and they break the surface of the soil, they are in their seedling stage. The first set of leaves to appear will usually single fingered, followed by a second set that may still be single fingered or perhaps 3 fingered. Once that second set appears growth will start to accelerate as the new leaves provide more photosynthesis. This process will continue, more new leaves, faster growth. Depending on the type of soil in use, mild vegetative nutes can be introduced at week 2. By week 3 most plants will start to show their sex. Males will start to produce pollen sacks and females will display pistils.

Weeks 4 - 6. The plants are now entering a pre flowering stage. During this time the plants should exhibit explosive growth, often as much as a new set of nodes and 1" vertical growth a day. This is the time when they will gain most of their vertical height. Many people make the mistake of switching from vegetative to flowering nutrients at this point, assuming that since they see flowers it must be the proper time. This is incorrect. If the switch to flowering nutes is made at this time the vertical growth will stop and the plant will put it's energy into producing buds. If you need to keep your plants small, or want them to finish earlier, they by all means switch nutes at this point. But if you want to get the most out of your plants continue feeding vegetative nutes until you see the vertical growth slow and stop. Depending on the strain that will usually be sometime during week 5 or 6.

Weeks 7 - 9. By now vertical growth has stopped and the switch to flowering nutrients has been made. The buds will start to fill out and put on weight, becoming hard and tight. Pistols will start to change from white to brown, orange, red, etc. By now the plants will also have developed a strong smell. Toward the end of this phase the large primary and smaller secondary fan leaves will begin to turn yellow. This is an indication that the plant is moving toward the end of it's life.

Weeks 10 - 11. At this time flowering nutes should be discontinued and only plain pHed water fed to flush the remaining nutrients from the soil and improve the taste. Yellowing of the fan leaves will continue as the plant draws the stored energy from them. Eventually they will die and fall off. By the time that the smaller leaves that come from out of the buds will also start to turn yellow. Then it's time to harvest.

I know that many of you are thinking that the seed bank said the plants will finish in 8-9 weeks, so why are you saying they take 10-11? The claims made by the seed banks are somewhat deceptive. If you switch to flowering nutes at week 3 or 4 the plants can finish in the times the seed banks say but they will remain small and not reach their full potential yield. Years of growing by myself and others has shown that autos do best if you follow this time line.

Of course, there will always be variations depending on the strain, the environment, nutrients, etc. This information is meant to only serve as a general guideline.

  9. Not with the seeds I'm using they pop in 24 to 36 hours in 3 to 5 days they would be trash. I soak for 24 hours then wet paper towel in zip lock bag. In a dark place not to cool. I have had seeds take 3 days they were big beans Tho. 5 days is pushing it IMO
    Good Luck

  10. I agree. They shouldn't take longer than 3 days to put out root. I have one at the moment that took 5 days to put out root. It's veryyyyy slow growing but was a freebie seed. It's over a week old and it's barely on its second set of leaves. Where as my other auto is the same age and has 3 sets of leaves... Luck of the draw sometimes. After all, it is a living thing!

  11. Your right some strains could take 3-5 days to pop. I just don't think you have to put it in between plates? it's just complicating it more than it really is. The two freebies I'm growing from Nirvana popped in 24 hours. And our one month old today. The leaves are two times bigger than my hand lol
    Good Luck[IMG][IMG]

  12. Best ansswer is there isn't a best way... I've dropped seeds straight into rockwool for years before even trying a different method (and only so I could speak about every method with experience). I gotten 95% germ rate with every method I've tried but my favorite is still dropping straight into RW.

Rockwool - drop seeds pointy side down into rockwoo and cover a bit make sure to keep RW wet you do not want it to dry out cause it will never absorb the same. If you're going hydro you can than drop the cube into a bigger cube or whatever method you're using.

Soil - Drop seed 1/6 " under the soil (I dont know the measurement poke it with your pinky, drop it pointy side down and cover) Wet soil and you probably wont need to wet it again for atleast a week. If you're grwoing in soil all you need to do is uppot down the road.

Paper Towel - Method someone else stated... but not my style why the extra step of taking seed and dropping into medium after its popped, IMO there is a chance of F'n up the seed in transplanting it and with the other 2 methods just as reliable I don't do this way but have with success.

If you had an easy cloner there is also inserts for it specifically for germination.

  13. I'm not going through this again.

Soak seeds and straight into dirt. Didn't know there were paper towels in the wide for seeds to land on ...

  15. Put seeds in soil and keep lightly moist
