Petition allowed for statewide vote on SB-423

HELENA - Another attempt to challenge Montana's new medical marijuana law, Senate Bill 423, is gaining momentum.
The bill will repeal the current medical marijuana law, I-148, and replace it with new legislation: limiting caregivers to three patients and no profit. Thus, it will close medical marijuana dispensaries statewide.

The bill is set to change Friday, but not without a fight.

On Tuesday, Attorney General Steve Bullock approved the Montana Cannabis Industry Association's proposed initiative referendum that would ask Montanans to vote on Senate Bill 423.

Now referendum writer John Masterson can begin collecting signatures on a petition. Petitioners must gather signatures from 15 percent of the total number of qualified voters in each of at least 51 of the state's legislative representative districts.

They have until Sept. 30 to submit petitions to county election administrators.
