    Hey Blades if your reading this thread I'd just like to say thanks for giving me the time.

    I've always been the kind of guy to listen to hard rock/Psychedelic rock classics like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd etc. It was the music I was brought up listening to and is the kind of Music all my Friends listen to.

    And as of recently I've been trying to broaden my musical taste by listening to Rap, the problem is I HATE much of the mainstream "Rap" that is popular I.E. Lil'Wayne (I seriously hate this guy)

    I have been able to find a few artists that just seem to light up my soul, Those being Tupac, Biggie, and my all time favorite at the moment Gang Starr! So basically I want your guys opinion based on the Artists that I listed what would be some good Rappers that I could consider?

    Again thanks guys I'll appreciate ANY feedback :p

  2. I'm not really into rap either but listen to Why?. They've got a really nice mix of this Progressive/Experimental thing and Hip-Hop going on.

  3. nice music taste, i basically listen to A LOT of weird, strange, psychedelic music, but since your into rap at the miment, ill give you some suggestions of really cool rappers to listen to:)

    Guru, he founded GangStarr, check out his solo music, its trippy and classic (RIP, he died today!)

    Cannibal Ox
    The Anonmyous
    Dilated Peoples
    A Tribe Called Quest
    Madvillian

  5. Listen to Big L, Nas (buy illmatic if you got some money, greatest rap album ever imo), Eazy E, if you keep looking hard enough for underground rap you'll find it eventually.

    Listen to MOBB DEEP's INFAMOUS and HELL ON EARTH albums. listen to WU TANG CLAN and the idv members of tha clan, RZA and GZA are my personal favourite. Go to the website "lala.com" and just search up some artists that are on this list. Oh and make a lala.com account, it takes 2 seconds and is free and its a good site.

    EDIT- i guess the link wasnt working so just go on google and type in "90s ultimate hip hop list" and look for the website "rateyourmusic"

  7. You could try Classified, its the only rap I listen to.

  9. Let's see here......There's been alot of good pure hip-hop posted so far, so I'm gonna name a few songs that are still good hip-hop, but carry a little bit of mainstream appeal.

    "Travellin Man" by Mos Def- Great beat that draws you in and doesn't bore you, and of course you get the lyricism of Mighty Mos.

    "Player's Ball" by Outkast- Andre 3000 is one of the best around, and the stuff Outkast put out in the 90's is somewhat well-known, yet underappreciated.

    "Get By" by Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Kanye West, Jay Z, Busta Rhymes- Awesome beat, gives you a great taste of different styles.

    "No Static" by Nappy Roots- More along the lines of punchline rap, yet still has some substance.

    "Hurt Me Soul" Lupe Fiasco - Lupe has some good stuff, sometimes he gets a little too excited with metaphors, but he definately is a great rapper with mainstream style.

    "Rock Bottom" by Emenim- Probably my favorite Emenim song.

    So yeah, obviously I'm not a hip-hop purist, but I think these songs all have great beats, and at least a little bit of lyrical substance.

  10. Lots of good posts thus far. Here's a few more names to throw into the ring:

    * Sage Francis
    * Rakim
    * POS
    * People Under the Stairs
    * Myself (couldn't resist :eek:)

  11. Definitely some quality, non mainstream hip hop listed so far. Here's a few more, though some have been named already -

    Zion I - chill, original, usually consistent lyrically
    Blue Scholars - chill, original, lyrically impressive, political at times
    Del the Funky Homosapien - chill, funny
    Aesop Rock - chill, original
    Edgar Allen Floe - oldschool from what I've heard so far, but very solid
    9th Wonder
    Justice League
    Jean Grey
    Pumpkinhead
    Murs - oldschool and fun
    Immortal Technique - lot's of politically influenced material
    One Self - chill

  12. Let me help you with some real rap.

  15. Hey guys thanks a lot! I've checked out every artist you guys have put down here and I have to say I'm beginning to become partial to "hip hop", The reason I parenthesized Hip Hop is because i am still a little bit unaware of the subtle differences between Hip Hop and Rap

    It seems to me, and correct me if I'm wrong but Hip Hop deals more with lyrics melding with beats where as Rap seems to be more lyrically dominating. Am I wrong to assume such?

    Anyways thanks for the feedback and If anyone else out there feels like helping a guy out your more than welcome to contribute your personal taste of Hip Hop in this thread,

    Good Day

  16. hip hop consists more of mainstream(not all). usually hip hop songs are party like songs with catch chorus and are mostly repeating the same thing... usually more lovey dovey type songs

    rap way deeper. rap is usually the way an artists expresses themselves and their thoughts. its more lyrical and usually there is lil to no chorus, or its really short. while the chorus are chatchy, they are usually only to seperate the different verses in the rap song.

    i know you said you hate Wayne, but i think you just got the wrong impression of him... hes not in it for the money like 90% of artists out there. sure hes rich, but he could have increased his wealth 50x if he had tried... hes released well over 2000 songs, and im pretty sure 90% were free or on mixtapes.he raps about every day shit and most of his stuff is funny and really clean man, check him out.

    in rap there is also "freestyles" which usually have no chorus and are just a straight rap, one of my favorite.

    imo, you should check out these wayne songs and see where your oppinion goes from there.
    drakes also great.

    just the tip of the ice berg of my favorite lil wayne stuff, last one is a free style

    Just found these guys...

    Trippy shit.

  18. Aesop Rock, Jean Grey, Cannibal Ox, Company Flow, Jeidi Mind Tricks, El-P, MF DOOM, Anti-Pop Consortium, Dalek, Dabrye, Big Juss, Vordul Mega.....

  19. Try some real deep underground house. Everyone loves house :)

    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HttLVzMO9mQ]YouTube - Kruse and Nuernberg - Lovers N Fighters (Original Mix)[/ame]

  20. Take with a grain of salt. I'm just saying ... rap and hip-hop are what you make of it. rapping can be deep. as long as you're not talking about mainstream radio it can be. if you're into underground, rapping gets way deep.

    Freestyle is when you rap off the top of your head; preferably you're not just trying to remember something you wrote earlier, freestyling is creativity ... not reading off your phone like I seen recently.
