Haven & Hearth is a free 2D MMO. It's like Harvest Moon, but not quite the same. You can tend your farm, making stuff like pastry, line cloth and silk and trade it for other stuff you need. You can be a metalworker and mine, smelt ore and make metals like bronze and steel, and craft weapons, armour and various tools. You can be a hunter and roam the woods, indiscriminately killing innocent woodland creatures. Or you can be a thief and instead of labouring to make the stuff yourself, just steal whatever you want. You're not limited in what you can do, though - every character can do everything once he gets the right skills, but specialising in one area at expense of others is the best thing to do.

The game itself is fairly slow-paced, which I guess makes it a perfect game to play stoned. Don't be fooled by the pace though, the game is pretty hardcore. You can get pretty much everything that isn't in your inventory stolen while you're offline, and you can get permakilled. When you're permakilled you lose 25% - 75% of your stats, depending on your tradition/change slider (full tradition lets you keep most of your experience, but also means you gain experience much slower, and moving the slider all the way takes a long time). People don't commit crimes easily, though. If you steal, wreck stuff or kill people, you leave scents which can be used to track you down and execute you even while you're offline. This all means that the PvP is very intense, but also rare because people are hesitant to risk their characters. The game is still quite fun even if you don't engage in PvP, like me.

You should be aware that the spawn area is a desolate wasteland. You should head northeast until you find some trees, which should take about 15 minutes. Or you can join the town of Brodgar, which is just north of the spawn area. Go into town and ask around, someone will call the people that can let you join.

Anyway, be sure to check the forums there if you start playing. The people are helpful and you'll usually get answers to your questions quickly, unless you're asking stuff that's explained in the stickies or other threads on the first page. Also, the game's wiki is a useful resource. Final advice: don't buy swimming ever. You will drown and permadie if you do.

  2. I just started this game after I read your post... And while it has a bit of a learning curve, it seems like a pretty cool game.

  3. This is a great game :D. Wonderful mix of the beneficial traits of both Wurm and Ultima online. How long have you been playing?
