Grow Tent: Exhaust and Carbon Filter

Discussion in 'Grow Room Design/Setup' started by Omeezy, Jul 18, 2017.

  1. I've been searching through the site and haven't found much in the way of information on fan setup, carbon filters, exhaust, etc. I'm not sure that all of the extras fit my needs. I do know that I don't want my house to reek of excellence constantly so I intend to use a carbon filter. I will have two plants under a 600 w LED in a 48x48x80 tent. I'm not sure the LED is going to produce a ton of heat so I don't know how much if any exhaust I will need. I have oscillating fans that can create a great breeze and will have a small footprint in my tent so I don't know if I really need any fans other than that? If we can pretend I'm stupid (which there's a good chance I am) and someone tell me what I need and appropriate set up. The room for the tent has a usable air conditioning vent if useful. Someone please dumb it down for me on

What I need for fans if anything beyond oscillating?

How/ what is the proper carbon filter and use?

If anything I'm missing all the help is appreciated.

  2. There is more than heat that you have to deal with. You have to supply fresh air and exhaust the old air. Imagine being locked in a vault with an oscillating fan. You'd be like, "I know I'm going to suffocate, but at least I have this fan and I'm not hot."

I have a tent that exact size and use a 6" fan and 6" charcoal filter with no problems. You can get both on amazon for less than $80. Just tape them together, hang them from the ceiling, and exhaust out of the side of your tent, or add an elbow if you prefer to exhaust out of the top.

  3. Do I need a Fan pulling air from outside into the tent or should the exhaust from 6" fan and carbon filter be sufficient with just the oscillating Fan?

  4. Yes, you need an in-line fan. Not real sure you can run a carbon filter without one. And even though you're using only LEDs, when you close any light up in a confined space it's going to create heat. With a tent that size, heat shouldn't be that big an issue, but when they get deep into maturity and heavy with resin, they definitely will reek unless you have a scrubber up or have some way to completely isolate that grow tent from the rest of your world. Keep in mind that light is the key to getting growth out of a plant and development out of buds. Keep plants and lamp as close as possible without risking light burn, to get biggest yields and also keep your plants from stretching too much. LEDs are limited in the coverage (sq. ft.) and you don't want to be forced to raise your lamp to accommodate more plants or you just rob them all of light. But with that lamp if it actually puts out what it should, you should be good for 2 plants and end up with a really nice harvest in the end. LEDs burn a tad hotter to plants than other forms of flower lighting, so hang your light high and bring it down over time until you figure out what is best for your plants. Hope it works out well for you. TWW

  7. No you don't need an intake fan.

  8. But tpu do need an intake port hole.. passive (just a hole) or active (with a fan). Or else there is no fresh air

  9. i have a 4x2x5 tent. I have ducting from an ac vent going into a hole on the bottom of my tent with a fan on ground next to it spreading fresh air. I have a 4" carbon filter with exhaust fan connected with ducting. The ducting goes out of the top the tent and through a hole I put into the wall exhausting into a separate bedroom. I leave the window in the exhausting bedroom half open and all seems to work just fine. I got a 4" carbon filter/exhaust fan(190 cfm)/variable controller combo off amazon for 100$. Van tech is the brand I believe.
