CANNABIS CULTURE – Dr. Lester Grinspoon, renowned Harvard psychiatry professor and marijuana movement icon, is lending his support to the Regulate Marijuana Like Wine ballot initiative to legalize cannabis in California in 2012.

"It will be an improvement and help move us toward the ultimate goal of ending this heinous prohibition," Grinspoon told Cannabis Culture in a telephone interview. "I'll endorse anything that moves us away from prohibition and towards freedom."

Regulate Marijuana Like Wine would legalize cannabis for adults in California and allow for a system of production, distribution and regulation similar to that of alcohol.

Grinspoon is well-known for his trailblazing research into medical marijuana and is author of the pivotal 1971 book Marihuana Reconsidered, an in-depth analysis of the history and uses of cannabis that challenged widely-accepted beliefs about the plant's dangers. He is also author of other books about psychoactive substances, including Psychedelic Drugs Reconsidered, Marijuana: The Forbidden Medicine and Psychedelic Reflections.

The 83-year-old doctor, who is currently Associate Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, has also endorsed another California ballot initiative, the Repeal Cannabis Prohibition Act of 2012.

Grinspoon has long challenged the veracity of government claims about the dangers of marijuana and believes the public has been fooled into accepting drug prohibition as an effective strategy.

"Mostly I think people don't know what they're opposed to," he said. "I call it cannabinophobia. It's like a grand delusional system that huge numbers of people have embraced. They oppose [cannabis] thinking it's dangerous when in fact it is one of the most extraordinary plants – in terms of its many utilities – that nature has given us."

Three major ballot initiative drives to legalize cannabis are competing for funding and endorsements in California and could appear on the election ballot in 2012. Read more about the initiatives on Cannabis Culture.

The growing list of endorsements for Regulate Marijuana Like Wine includes Judge James P. Gray, Congressman Dana Rohrabacher, former Gov. Gary Johnson, NORML Founder Keith Stroup, Prince of Pot Marc Emery, Tommy Chong, Ganja Guru Ed Rosenthal, groups like Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, The Libertarian Party, and many more.
