i have this glass stick. about the size and thickness of a pencil, with two glass spheres at each end. i cant figure out what the hell to do with it. it doesnt heat up hot enough to light anything with a normal bic. i really hope this wasnt a poker to pack the ash down, i have a finger for that.

Why would you pack down ash with it? It's for cleaning the bowl out with when you've cashed (smoked all of) it. Just be careful not to break it (or your piece). Wait... Spherical ends? Wtf?!
Glass rod in pooper or gtfo. I have some glass stirring rods in my laboratory that I sometimes use to pack down ash. The only benefit I can think of from packing down ash is in a freshly cleaned glass bowl... I like to not ash the bowl for 3 or 4 bowlpacks so a resin 'screen' builds up at the bottom. Speaking of which, It's time to bust out the isopropanol and Q-tips!
If you heat it with a torch it will light herb but it can also break. Packing ash with it isn't horrible though. No burnt, smelly, ashy finger sounds fine to me.
