few quick q's

hey gc. I'm growing for my first time and its growing pretty well so far. but i was wondering 2 things.
1. what kind of lights do you need? do they have to be flourescent?
2. how often do i need to water it?

And the stem has only gotten to about 3 inches so far and its opening up on top.

help please?
