Its a wick system. It uses 6 pots that are filled with hydroton. In between the hydroton you put in a wicking cloth strip which brings water up to the roots. Its been a while but I believe theres a certain way you have to use the wick other wise the water will not be drawn up the strip properly. I also noticed the plastic of the reservoir is very fragile and the corners can get stress cracks. Also the pots are also fragile and break easily.
It's an ok system for beginners but, if you plan on growing for weight, definately think about something else. Personally, I would recommend an ebb and flow system. Great for beginners and easy to set up and maintain.
