Cmh + mh ballast?

  1. Hey guys I'm going to be upgrading to hid lighting soon and was curious about what bulb to buy. Since I'm a cheapie I'm going to purchase a 250w high bay light (mh only I believe) and then convert it into a grow light by extending the socket with a cord from the ballast.

If you don't know, a high bay light is the kind of light you see in warehouses, or stores like SAMs club or Costco.

Anyway so my question is can the ballast of a high bay light run a ceramic metal halide bulb? I've read it's supposed to be used with magnetic hps systems but since its a mh with slight differences creating a broader spectrum could it work with a high bay light ballast?

  2. I use a CMH bulb... you do need a magnetic HPS as far as I know.

  3. Darn! I was hoping it would work because isn't it just a slightly different classic metal halide bulb? It has to do with the igniter or something right? Which is why mh ballasts can't run hps but hps can run both. So the cmh bulb is actually more related to a hps bulb?
