breakthrough grow

  1. i put mulch on the top layer of my soil in a container for moisture lock and less watering, now the plant grew so I put a layer of potting soil, will the roots be able to grow through the layer of mulch?
     
  2. They should be able too. Next time use perlite instead.
     
  3. Did you put the soil on top of the mulch? If so, you may have problems if that mulch wasn't good and broken down. Unless that mulch is older and pretty soil-like, I would dig the new soil and old mulch out of there, add new soil and then put the mulch back on top.

    Here's the reason why: If your mulch is bark and stuff and/or organic material that is still breaking down, it can harm your plant. Firstly, it can rob nitrogen from your soil as it decomposes. Also, it can provide air-gaps and moisture pcokets that can cause the roots that grow into there to be attacked by pathogens and/or rot.
