When branches are just about to shoot their load and a few balls have popped, I cut them, stick them in a glass of water and move them to an out of the way place. Then cut a little piece of wax paper and a little tape or twist ties and secure it under the male flowers. Most will open in a day or two, and the wax paper is great because the pollen barely sticks to it.
