So I understand that a ballast is required to power a hps light but what I don't understand is what a ballast is or what it does... I am looking into buying a ballast for a 600w hps i have thd bulb and the hood and everything just not the ballast. It would be very nice if someone could help me out with this!!

a ballast changes your 120v or whatever you have coming out of your wall into a smaller voltage but a higher wattage. It also ignites the lamp because most HID lightbulbs don't have one built in. Anyone feel free to correct me. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrical_ballast
