  1. Cats and their catnip! Just like humans, many cats enjoy getting high! And judging from their reactions, catnip must be quite a trip! For humans, catnip can be used to make a soothing tea, but it has no real high. :coffee: Sadly, my cat is one of the "non-reactor" cats, but open a can of tuna and he reacts to it immediately with loud yowling! lol

Also, when I was in college the first time, we did a field trip to the zoo. While there, we learned that tigers will also react like cats to catnip, and also lavender! Sadly, our guide had neither.

How Catnip Gets Your Cat High

One of the stranger aspects of the modern human-pet relationship is that many cat owners recreationally dose their pets with a psychoactive drug. I'm talking, of course, about catnip.

Catnip is a bizarre phenomenon for a few reasons. It's the only recreational drug we routinely give to animals, and though it basically makes them freak out — rolling on the ground, drooling, and mashing their face into wherever the catnip was sprinkled — it has essentially no effect on us.

If you've ever wondered how it works, this article's for you.

    Catnip is a plant
Specifically, that plant is Nepeta cataria, a shrub in the mint family. It's native to Europe and Asia but now grows wildly across the Americas as well, along roads and highways.

The plant produces a chemical called nepetalactone in microscopic bulbs that coat its leaves, stems, and seedpods. When these fragile bulbs rupture, they release the nepetalactone into the air.

  3. I had a cat like that many years ago, and he was black, too. He had another name when we got him, but ended up being called "Stony" because he would go after any plants I had, and would get into the stash box if it was left open!

  4. My daughter has three cats and we gave them catnip. Every one of them got into it and rolled around in it. It was hilarious.

  6. Stuff grows pretty easily in quite a few places. I usually plant some in a pot outside during summer.

  8. I always love to see a cat roll around in catnip...awww! Every cat is different though. I had one cat that I gave it to so she could calm down bc we had to take her to the vet lol. My husband was trying to tell me to wait till she's asleep and come up behind her but I'm all, "Let's just give her catnip!". But it made her moody and agitated lol so she bit me anyway. I survived though. I don't blame her for doing that though, some people would be mad but I just put myself in her place, I hate those carriers too. I'm claustrophobic anyway, probably many cats are too.
But I love watching the cats who just chill on it lol, rolling around and staggering... great to get high with a cat! :D

  9. Puts me to sleep. Got a colony of cats here. Was feeding them catnip regularly. A momma kitty with a load of kittens ~ says, ' Hey! I got no milk! So I serve 2 sets of water and food. One with catnip and one without for the pregnant and nursing.
