I bet it would be a great place, find a nice sunny spot away from the trails, can't picture a better place to grow dope ...I've always wanted to hike the AT (the whole thing), it'd be badass...
In Kentucky at least the Appalachia area is highly patrolled with taskforce and helicopter flyovers. There are at least two organizations directly tied to it, the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area taskforce and the Appalachian Drug Taskforce. But it's a lot of area so I say take your chances, just be careful.
