  1. I'm making a trip to Chapter's tomorrow, and Thompson is on my list to check out.

  3. i read when i was youger the perks of being a wallflower and go ask alice. both are kinda reall life teen things i was into. and eletric kool aid acid test

  4. The Pedagogy of the Opressed- by Paulo Freire.

    KEROUAC IS AWESOME.

  5. I love all the philosophy type books and the typical (I don't mean typical in a bad way... Thompson, Kerouac, Kesey-- they're all brilliant but definitely the obvious choices) authors.

I'm a die-hard Harry Potter fan. People talk shit about them and that's fine, but I have never enjoyed a series as much as this one. I have all seven of them and have read some of them several times, haha.

The Chronicles of Narnia... there's like 8 or 9 books in the series, and they're all really great. There's a lot more to the story than just the lion, the witch, and the wardrobe. There are books that don't even have any of those characters whatsoever.

There's a trilogy of books called Sabriel, Lirael, and Abhorsen by Garth Nix and it's about necromancers who carry sets of bells that can control the Dead. It's pretty tuff shit. I love them all-- they're fantasy type of books but they're badass.

Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess is a good one.

The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test by Tom Wolf.

    ~o~o~o~o~o~o~o~o~o~o~

    ...reading is good :)

  6. ^^^ by bringing up clockwork orange you have reminded me I want to read Trainspotting, filth and porno by irvine welsh. I will get to it some day. haha

  7. My old flatmate has read all those. He did not recommend Porno or Filth..

  8. My friend had this book he bought at a flea market or something, it was a hardcover oversized book and all the cover consisted of was big bold text that read "GET STONED AND READ THIS BOOK". so we did :)

  9. Seconded!

  10. I can't read a book for shit when I'm baked. I hate it.

  11. Regarding Hunter S. Thompson, you should definitely pick up Hell's Angels. I reckon it's his best book; sure, F&L is entertaining, but Hell's Angels is a blow by blow account of a violent subculture emerging in the early stages of the 'hippie era' with the Vietnam protests and the drug scene dramatically taking off - not necessarily acting in concert. It'd be cool to read both Hell's Angels and Electric Kool Aid Acid Test because some events are depicted by different viewpoints in the two (notably the Ken Kesey LSD party). It also has the best ending ever in a non-fiction book, in my opinion.

Personally the whole genre of Victorian/early twentieth century science fiction really clicks with me when I'm high, mainly because their descriptions are just so shocking (and, uh.. pulpy*, for lack of a better word) yet you can still draw a lot of parallels with the contemporary world. I'm in the midst of a H.G. Wells phase (just finished Island of Dr Moreau, reading The Invisible Man) and from there I want to move on to Philip K Dick's stuff.

Also, Vonnegut. Kurt fucking Vonnegut is amazing when you're lightly stoned and still able to read. Slaughterhouse Five and his short story anthology Welcome to the Monkey House are funny as hell and may well blow your mind.

Finally, straying away from books per se, I've found that graphic novels are perfect for when you're too baked to read lines of prose. They provide great visual stimulation, not just with the illustrations themselves but with the subtle patterns throughout (especially in Watchmen). Warren Ellis' Transmetropolitan, with its stylised portrayal of a futuristic Hunter S, is top drawer.

(*pulpy... excessive, colourful, larger than life, kind of steampunk, though not always a good thing - cinematic equivalent to this term would be The Shadow or LXG)

  12. I saw a bunch of people say HST already, and I defiantlly agree his books are awsome (Hell's Angels espically)

Ive also recently been getting into Christopher Moore books. You should check him out.

  13. Philip K. Dick is also awsome to read while high especially the three stigmata of palmer eldritch

  14. Great read. I think everybody here would really enjoy and benifit from this book.

  15. ya tolkein is great, ya im just finishing the hobbit for the third time (1st time reading it only when im high) and ive read the trilogy too... another good book was anthony kiedis' autobio called Scar Tissue...

  16. what is anarchism? by Alexander Berkman.

  17. Good taste. Chris Moore is a good read when stoned, lots of humor and interesting characters. I highly recommend Lamb: The Gospel of Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal.

  18. all psychology books are great, stoned or not

  19. Freakonomics by Levitt
