Any Sitar/Tabl, Bhangra and Gypsy music lovers out there?

  1. The past year I've grown bored of my usual music vices... and with the help of pandora.com have become almost fanatical about the Indian and Gypsy music... especially the modern techno mixes and cultural mash-ups. The music has such a mellow, yet strange sound to it. And there's some sitar players that can play suuuper fast. And tabla drums? Daaaamn... they can play faster than death metal drummers. Seriously.

Anyways, I'm probably a freak, as usual. But is there anyone else out there digging this trippy shit?

I got so into it, that I bought a sitar and a tabla drum. They are the perfect instruments to play when high, as they are very dynamic and it's super easy to zone out while playing.

    Namaste!

  2. ya i think sitar music sounds so aweome i wanted to get into it and play it a bit but i already have a guitar and a bass lol. is it true that tabla drummers can play faster than death metal drummers?

  3. Sitars are expensive! They're only made in India so they have to be imported. And the cheap ones are built poorly, so you have to invest to get one that's properly built. Even then, you have to constantly tune it b/c there are 20 strings and the tuning pegs are simple wooden pegs. So, it constantly slips out of tune. But they are very weird. You don't push the string onto the fretboard like a guitar because the frets are raised up a couple inches and curved so it's suuuper easy to bend notes. You can bend nearly a whole octave!

And yes, there are definitely tabla players who blast faster than death metal drummers using just their fingers and 2 drums. I'm a huge fan of super fast death metal, too (check out The Berzerker). I'll see if I can find a good example on youtube.

Meanwhile, check out this sweet ass video. 2 drummers and a sarod player. Sarod is like a fretless lute. Lots of bending and sliding sounds.

  4. Here you go! Wow. This guy is freaking amazing! At about 40 seconds he starts playing some crazy fast beats! By 3min 30 seconds he's rivalling Berzerker's speed. lol

  7. i wanna import a tambura/tanpura.

  8. Hell yeah!

I've joked several times to my girlfriend that I'm going to buy her one so we can start a band. lol! They're freakin expensive, too. Like $300+ But what a weird instrument... a huge guitar-like thing with no frets and you don't hold down any strings. It cracks me up that you can get an electric tanpura is just a little box that makes constant Do-Re-Mi droning sounds.
