I want to build a few LED lights for experimentation. I've read tons of guides, bought a few hundred LEDs, tools, etc. I'm very mechanically inclined, and have done some mild electronics work (have done more house electrical work though). Hey, I'm assuming you understand ohms law etc... You'll be putting a bunch of leds in series and parallel based upon your power supply. http://led.linear1.org/led.wiz This might help a little.
