    Santa Clara County sheriff's deputies eradicated five marijuana gardens growing more than 20,000 pot plants on Mount Hamilton in San Jose on Monday, putting a dent in what authorities believe is a very organized Mexican cartel operation.

    If left to mature, the plants could have sold for more than $80 million, according to authorities.

    A Kansas City, Kan., man caught in the act of tending to his 900 marijuana plants was sentenced Monday to 7½ years in prison.

    Kevin A. Novosel, 23, pleaded guilty last year in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Kan., to one count of conspiracy to manufacture a controlled substance and one count of carrying a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, U.S. Attorney Eric Melgren's office said in a release Tuesday.
