Anatomy of a bong

Discussion in 'Apprentice Marijuana Consumption' started by rob11101, Mar 8, 2009.

  1. I would like to learn more about bongs. Like why dual chambered? What are percs? etc. If any one has some linkage or would just like to spit out some facts that would be awesome.

  2. this is how a bong works

a bong works by a tube with one open end, you inhale through the top and have a little water in the bottom of the tube to filter, then you have a downstem which can be thought of as almost being a tree limb coming out from the bong, but it goes under the water inside the tube, while the exposed end of the downstem has a bowl at the end which can be removed to clear the bong, working as a carb.

this is a perculator which houses water midway up the tube to add extra filtration, there are two common types of perculators.
One is called a "tree perc" heres a pic

    this is a dome perc

and then they are ashcatchers which essentially are bubblers where a bowl should normally be, these are used to make further filtration.
    here is an "inline ashcatcher"

here is the generally more common bubbler variety of ashcatcher

here is a bowl which connects to the upper end of the downstem

    here is a normal downstem

here is a downstem with a couple little slits in the bottom end, which make it so instead of big huge smoke bubbles coming from the bottom, it disperses smoke sideways into the water helping the bong fill more level, plus it cools it down a little and makes it easier to clear

and instead of slits some diffusers have little holes, hope i helped lol
    oh how i love bongs
    :bongin:

  3. The Water Pipe, more commonly called the Bong.
A type of smoking paraphernelia that involves drawing smoke through water to cool the smoke down, making it less harsh and easier to take bigger hits which get you higher (depending on person).

Ash catcher, sometimes called an A/C
An attachment to the bong, it is like a mini bong or a bubbler that you attach to the bong. Ash catchers catch ash (obviously lol) which means your bong may not get as dirty as fast. It also acts as another cooler.

    Perculator, also called a perc.
A part of the bong that disperses the smoke evenly to separate it before being inhaled, this gives smoother hits and the increased surface area of the smoke cools it down more.

    Ice Catcher.
A chamber that comes after the water filtration chamber, you can put ice in here which further cools the smoke down.

    Carb.
A hole used to clear out smoke, when filling the chamber you put your finger over the carb, when you want to clear the chamber you simple take your finger off of the carb and fresh air pushes the smoke into your lungs.

    Slider.
An alternative to the carb, it also generally works better. Basically you can slide the bowl off of the downstem, so your separating the weed from the bong to bring in fresh air to clear the bong.

That is your most basic stuff about bongs.

A basic 'tube'(straight bong where the bottom is not bigger than the rest of the chamber) has 3 main pieces it needs to work.
There is the bong itself, a downstem, and a slide/bowl.
When you put the downstem in the bong, it will end right above the bottom(or floor) of the water chamber, you fill water till it's about an inch over the hole at the end if the stem. When you pull from the top air will bubblenup through the water, thus filtering the smoke.
Ashcatchers are another piece that has it's own water chamber for extra filtration, it goes between the downstem and bowl.
Perolators are somewhere in the middle of the main chamber, where you can add more water to even further filter the smoke. There are tree percs, where there are seperate arms(or branches if you will), and there are dome percs, tree percs are usually more high end, with a minimum of 3 arms, going up to as many of 8 or more.
I forgot to mention there are also diffused downstems, where instead of one big opening going into the water, there are additional slits at the end to go under the water. This diffuses the smoke more by seperating it into more bubbles. Most bongs come standard with a diffused stem nowadays.
