3.8L V6 to a 5.0L engine Q?

Discussion in 'General' started by Dawson_Canuck, Aug 20, 2007.

  1. I have a 3.6 litre V6 that i want to drop a new engine into. My sisters boy friend will give me his 5.0(V8), does anyone know if the transimission patterns are the same or will i need to put a new transmission into my car? its a wild guess that anyone would really know but, its worth a try:smoke:

  2. what car, what motor, what transmission and do the mounts lign up?

  3. im a need alot more info but if your talking mustang then no they do not most years more info and i can answer

  4. the 5.0 id from a mustang (1998 i think) and its going into a 1989 Mercury Cougar LS. im not doing it now, but in a few months during winter so i have a smokin car in spring and can race it.

  5. I am a mustang guru, its where I got my SN from....

YES you can drop a 5.0 into your current mustang. YES the tranny will bolt up to it. However you will possibly need a different bellhousing to make it work. IMO you should definately use a different tranny though. Is it a stickshift or auto?? If a stickshift then you should go with a simple, cheap, T5 tranny. Those are what comes stock in 5.0 cars....The v6 tranny is made for a v6 and not a 5.0 . The 5.0 will make alot more power. What year is your car? I can tell you that youll definately need a complete wiring harness from a 5.0 car. Youll also need the computer from it. Also possibly a new fuel setup, cooling setup, and driveshaft. All that power will be useless if your gonna keep the stock 7.5 rearend in that car. The stock differential is not limited slip. That means all the power will be going to one wheel. Very bad. Youll at least need to upgrade to the ford racing traction lock differential. But if you wanna do it the right way, just swap in a complete 8.8 rear from a GT mustang. That 7.5 is just too small for a v8.... Youll need alot of little things such as speedo and tach gauges, brakes would be a good idea, plus youll need a complete dual exhaust for it...Swapping that motor in your v6 car will cost quite a bit of money trust me. It may be cheaper and easier to just trade your v6 in for a GT....

  7. GAVE him a $15,000 engine?? Dont think so...

  8. ok so i will be bying a new tranny probly if i drop the 5.0 to save a hassel. and i was planning on putting pausy trac(sp?lol) in it.but then again i might keep it with the 3.8.....drag racing is bracket racing:p

  9. it will match up,,, the c-4 trans is the same for both motors,,, and you may not even need to change the bellhousing,,,,

maybe the motormounts,,,, but most likely,, they will be the same also...

    i did it with a 2.8 v-6,,, to a 5.o in a mustang,, and changed nothing,,,,

  10. The 5.0 became a standard option for some Cougars between '89 and '92, so you should be able to do it with very little modification.

The Cougars during those years shared the platform with the Ford Thunderbird, rather than the Mustang.

Consult the shop you plan to have do the work, they'll be able to give you the best estimate obviously, because they know their labor costs and other costs associated with your area.

  11. unless your gonna do the work your self...sell the 3.8 and buy a 5.0... they are not expensive at all.

  12. i hope your not planning on having a shop do this,,,,

this is a simple procedure,, you should do it yourself,,,, get your hands dirty,, and your knuckles bloody,,,,

it only takes a day,, old motor out,,, new motor in,,,,

ive pulled so many motors in my time,,, it aint even funny,,,, i got a cousin that i help mechanicin on his stuff with all the time,,,, and we are some motor pullin mo-fo's:cool:
