Apocalypse Now Appreciation Thread

  1. so, i didnt see any apocalypse now threads, so here it is! i personally like this movie because it is so dark and surreal. it shows how war screws up the human mind and makes us go insane, doing crazy things to eachother. so anyway, post your thoughts here!

p.s. i reserved the "redux" version from the library so ill be watching it pretty soon :D

  2. I've only seen Redux - but I will be getting the bluray box set when it comes out. Has both versions. Redux was great though - a bit long but that only added to the strange surreal quality. Arguably Marlon Brando's best performance.

  3. Marlon Brando is pretty good, but the monologues by Martin Sheen are amazing. This movie is an excellent modern rendition of Joseph Conrad's The Heart of Darkness. The criticism of culture and war paint a fantastic picture that enlighten the viewer...

  5. First time watching it I didn't understand the hype. Watched it again last weekend...HOLY FUCK. The monologues are incredible and SOOO much detail in everything in the movie. I got completely engrossed and was couch-locked the entire time, except for 1 bathroom break.

Care to let me know how it is when you get it? If it's good enough I'm going to finally make the plunge into blu ray

I'll post a review when I get it. Blu ray is worth it, in my opnion. The players and the movies are fairly cheap now, and the quality is amazing.

  7. so the library FINALLY got my copy today, so either tommorow or next week i'll be watching this excellent movie... i got Redux on DVD, fyi

  8. seen it once, like it but really long and was losing focus cause of what was going on in the room... i plan on given it another watch, with some blunts burning..

  9. You can watch it for free on epix.com if you sign up for the trial. Make sure you watch the orginal and not the redux, as I've heard the redux blows. I haven't seen it yet but I plan on watching it soon. If you sign up for epix make sure you watch the Louis CK movie. It's hilarious...literally...no, I mean that's actually the title of the movie.

  10. I haven't seen the original for many years. I'm currently in a trial period for netflix and I see it's available to download. I'd say now is a good time to hit the iolite vaporizer with super silver haze, relax and watch the movie.

  11. I still havent seen this movie, I should probably get on that. Martin Sheen, Marlon Brando, Robert Duvall, you cant go wrong with those guys alone!

  12. I always hate to attack another's opinion because it is close-minded in some senses but I have to disagree with you here. Brando's part in the film wasn't that large, he gave three of the best performances I've ever seen in "On The Waterfront", "A Streetcar Named Desire" and "Julius Caesar" and I'd say his part in "The Wild One" also exceeded that of Apocalypse Now. But I guess we might just have to disagree:p

And as for this film, it is a great film, Martin Sheen is fantastic, the whole thing has a sinister nature about it, in the content, the mood, the lighting that just seems to embody the craziness of the Vietnam War so well. It's one of my favourites, I've seen it a few times.

Plus it is worth adding that the woman Sheen sleeps with has really great tits:D

  13. Apocalypse now is my one of my favorite war movies read the book if u havent Its the heart of darkness by joesph conrad its about british imperialism in the congo. Apocalypse now is based off the story of that book going up river to find kurts who has been playing god with the local population a very good read

  14. Very good movie i love both the original and redux. Allthough im only a fan of this and other movies becuase im a huge vietnam war buff XD

  15. Love the part where they're water skiing down the river playing the stones haha. Knocks the guy of his fishing boat.

  16. I saw redux. Lots of weird deleted scenes were included. WTF was up with the part when Brando called the journalist hippie "mutt", that wasn't scripted haha, really weird was he jealous of the actor or something cause the actor killed it. Haha, Brando was angry cause the actor was acting the shit out of his scenes or something idk.. Also the scene with the cambodian children surroduning Brando part was funny, children were fucking ruining the scene but Brando kept his cool, haha I thought he would trip.

  17. "I watched a snail crawl along the edge of a straight razor. That's my dream; that's my nightmare. Crawling, slithering, along the edge of a straight razor... and surviving."

one of my favorite movie quotes.

    best war movie ever made

Got the redux on dvd, watched it with my roommate on some freshly picked... things, and it was intense. Every scene was PACKED full of deeper meanings, this is a movie to be watched many times, over and over, in its full 3 and a half hour glory!

The original is too short and meant for impatient people who can't appreciate a lengthy film; those who appreciate a masterpiece story should watch the redux.

Very wrong sir (about it being the British), I did an essay over that book for a history class; Conrad was criticizing BELGIAN imperialism in the Congo "Free" State. In the book, there's a few very important scenes which indicate that he didn't hate imperialism, he hated poorly run, inefficient imperialism; the most important of which, is where he is looking over a map of Africa, and discusses the colors on it (which indicated the various claims by imperial powers). He based the book off of his own visit there. Conrad actually PRAISED British imperialism, because he viewed it as fluid and efficient, unlike the deterioration and inefficiency seen in the Congo, which Francis Ford Coppola VERY well expressed in his movie via the medium of the Vietnam War (which was another example of imperialism gone wrong!).

Sorry, I went hardcore into the details of this tale during my studies. I was the guy in the class who everyone thought weird because I could go on and on about the movie and it's relations to Conrad's work.

  20. A great film, I saw it in a movie theater in NYC when it came out and it was mind-blowing.

I do have to say that while Marlon Brando was excelllent, as always, it was not, by any stretch, his best role.   His best work was much earlier in his career.  I'm not knocking Brando at all, as I think that he was a brilliant actor and probably the best actor of his, and possibly any, generation.
