Decarbing bud question/methods?

  2. To do this 250F heating without an airtight seal for more then 5 min would be POTENCY SUICIDE! You would evap a large portion of thc, larger than the amount created by decarb. However if you can achieve an airtight environment safely then this type of heating can cause drastic increases in potency.

    The whole argument in the above thread is because of a failure to understand principles thermodynamics/chemical equilibrium, anyone who has taken a first year college chemistry course knows that the solid and gaseous thc exist in a ratio determined by it's equilibrium constant, which changes exponentially with temperature(substances that appear not to react have a very small constant and therefore a lower products to reactants ratio). So as you approach the boiling point (where the vapor pressure = the atmospheric pressure) of thc, the amount of thc vapor to resin increases exponentially. If you have a sealed environment, this ratio is maintained and you don't lose much potency. However, if one just has their pot on a baking sheet the air around it is constantly being exchanged with the outside world, meaning more and more resinous thc vaporizes to maintain the ratio.

    It's the same deal for decarb, it happens fairly slowly at low temperatures but as the temperature increases the carboxyl group becomes even more thermodynamically unfavorable so it hops off the thc molecule faster.

    BTW in the sativex patent they EXPLICITLY mention that they use air-tight sealed containers as reaction vessels for decarb.
     
  3. With mason jars, it's as close as you can get to airtight sealed and safe for anybody to use so...yeah, it does work.
