How much lime do I need to add in a high peat mix?

  1. So for my outdoor grow this year I bought 9 fricken bales of peat moss to use as a soil amendment for it's aerating properties. I'll probably be mixing it about 40% native soil(relatively bad soil), 40% peat moss, and 20% compost. First, what are your brief thoughts on this soil mix? Second, how much lime do I need to mix in to balance the acidity of the peat moss?

What are your thoughts on peat moss as an amendment in general, other than it's bad for the environment?

The holes are about 3 ft by 1.5 ft deep.

A half cup to full cup per what? And thanks man but I've done a shit ton of searching on multiple forums and google and have come up with very little and whatever I did read, the amounts varied wildly. I'm so sick of seeing people ask questions on this site, even ones that aren't common or easily answered by searching, and they get a bunch of negative responses telling them to do some research. It's every damn time it seems like.

This place is so negative compared to the other grower forums...

  3. I believe he means per hole. I personally would use a half cup. Of course this is a guess from a distance. A pH soil test kit is only a few bucks and will give you something to go by.

The sticky at the top of this forum has several soil recipes that should help. Using peat as an amendment is important because you want an airy soil that retains water, has pockets for some beneficial microbes.

In addition to this forum you can check on how tomatoes are grown. Our weed is grown just like a tomato, same ferts, soil needs etc.

  4. of course that being my 1st post, ymmv...(your mileage may vary)
