New grower need stronger stems

Discussion in 'Growing Marijuana Outdoors' started by 420address, Apr 21, 2011.

  1. Whats up guys? I am a new grower having some difficulty growing strong stems. My plants outside are growing huge leaveswith a small stem that falls over EVERY time it rains a little. i have been using some 1/4 miracle grow without uping the dosage. I've heard alot of bad things from some folks here about mg growers but it worked well for me. I have a few pics of some of my plants I am growing in the window attached. I will add the ones outdoor asap. Also i used a little hydrated lime and I am growing in a pretty shady area as i dont want them to burn up in the sunlight. Any tips from some of the more advanced growers would be GREATLY appreciated.:D

  2. waiting on replys for this too..

mine are outdoors too, and there was about a week there they actually just layed on there sides.. they fixed themselves though :) now they stand strong.. what they are doing is stretching for light... so i'd say give them a little MORE light.

  3. Get a couple of 4 ft shoplights and kepp them under that for 3-5 weeks before putting them out. You can also take a small piece of a drinking straw slice it vertically and put that around the base of your plant. Sometimes they are just slow off the get go baby em for a min and you'll be fine

They like it when they get played with too twist the stem to encourage strength.

  4. Get an oscillating fan blowing a gentle breeze around and they will sturdy up real quick.

  5. That works for me too! ;)

  6. These are our oldest babies. They are about a month old from seedling.I am finding it alot harder to grow. I am going to the hydroponic store this weekend with limited cash, what merchandise do you guys recommend, also Any tips on growing at all will be greatly appreciated!

  7. I have a box fan, will it work on it's lowest setting? Or is it to strong?

  8. We have officialy started "playing" with them!

  9. They're a month old? They're looking very small. They must have been severely stressed somehow.

Could you be overwatering them? The soil should not be kept saturated. Wait until the soil feels dry 1/4 inch below the surface before watering them again.

They shouldn't need any supplemental nutes yet. If you have been giving them any stop. Are pre-pH'ing the water and are you checking the pH of the runoff?

Below is a my Hawaiian snow at 32 days from actually putting the seeds in paper towels to germinate. 29 days from sprouting.

^ No, but it's a femmed seed so it better be a girlie.

It looks a bit messy because it's an LST'd sativa and they always do.

It's about right for a month old. A couple of other strains I'm growing are about the same. A couple more are a little stunted due to problems earlier on.

    For scale, it's in a 1.5 gallon (7L) pot

Edit: There you go. A better picture so you can use my feet for scale. :)

This isn't anything special. It's what I'd expect for a month old.

  14. this is our first grow and we thought they were big :(( we dropped them in the ground almost a month ago. they are bag seeds. We have been feeding them 1/4 miracle grow. should we restart or will they be ok? do you think harvesting in october will be too soon for them seeing as how they are midgets compared to your giants?

Start your next grow by giving them 24/0 under veg lights with a fan for a couple of weeks.

CFLs are fine for this. Keep the lights close (2 or 3 inches) & your plants won't stretch. Don't aim the fan directly at the plants. They just need some gentle air movement in & around them. Harden them off by taking them outside for a few hours a day for 3 or 4 days & then put them in the ground.

    Works for me!

  16. We have more seeds and decided to turn this into our grow journal. We will start on saturday after we go to the store. please do not let this thread die!

Sorry to piss on your parade, but no, they are not looking good. If you correct whatever is causing the stunting they will grow, but you won't reach full potential in terms of yield. If you start from scratch now and get things right your new ones will probably overtake those ones within 2 weeks. It's definitely worth thinking about.

Also, buy seeds. You have no idea about the genetics of that plant. It could be anything crossed with industrial hemp for all you know. For what seeds cost it's definitely worth it, just to know what you're smoking at the end if nothing else.

Your first grow should be a steep learning curve and primarily for fun and experience. That doesn't mean you shouldn't get good results though. With a little research and a little investment you can get the most out of a first grow.

Do you have a pH meter? That is a must and they are not that expensive. Check eBay or your headshop.

Also, please answer my question in my previous post re soil and watering.

  18. Also, I just posted this on another thread where someone was asking about a first time grow. But it all applies to you guys too.

  19. we are doing good on the watering technique. we put our finger to the second knuckle and also pick them up to see how light they are. we have yet to get a ph meter that is on our shopping list. We decided to do bag seeds just because we are not experienced and this is our experimental phase.

  20. Good good, that rules that one out then. Personally I don't like the digging-your-finger-into-the-soil technique. I just break up the top layer of soil with my fingers across the whole of the pot and judge it from that. Breaking it up also means you get a more even absorption across the whole of the pot.

Where are you getting your water from? Is it just tap water? If so, how hard is your tap water where you live? Are you letting it sit for a day or two to allow at least some of the chlorine to evaporate? And just in case you missed it last time I said it: stop the nutes, it's way too early. I suspect it may be that that is stunting them.

Even if you are deciding to start from scratch, trying to get these ones going before chucking them out wouldn't hurt. You may learn a valuable lesson and know what to avoid next time.
