I've been drumming for about 9 years. I rock some Pearl SMX at home (only have Tama Imperialstars at college) and dig Zildjian cymbals. My band at home plays some throwback blues-rock type stuff. I'm working with a trio here that's doing much more progressive, jazzy stuff. Here are a few of my favorite videos... I always wish I could, I severely lack the coordination to [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVecMleaSe8I[/ame] think this dude is pretty bad ass. (please don't talk shit if you don't like slipknot >.<)
I personally like just creating my own feel of jazz music every once in awhile, when you get more advanced try some of Portnoy's songs (For instance I had played about 9 years before being able to play most of his songs although there are still lots I can't play haha, and the ones I can play aren't perfect!) Some of my fave's nowadays are: Chris And Kevin's Excellent Adventure Three Minute Warning Parts of When the Water Break (Working on getting the whole song down) Dark Eternal Night Pull Me under And Let Me Breathe This is probably not even close to what your looking for haha. The video wouldn't load on my browser. And to echoe09, how do you like the Meinl cymbals? Whenever I hear them online they sort of sound trashy (Not in a good way) If I ever got them I would probably only use their china's. No pic right now but ill give a desc. of my setup. Started collecting sabian cymbals when I was 7 EPEK-Genesis Maple drums: 13x6 20ply vented snare 10x8, 12x9 and 13x10 rack toms Two 24x18 bass drums with 4" port 14x14 and 16x16 suspended floor toms 14" AAX studio hats 14" HHX sutdio crash 18" HHX chinese Mid and low Max stax 7,9,11 inch max splashes 18" medium thin AA crash 18" HHX studio crash 20" HHX chinese 22" HH rock ride (as well as a Jojo mayer fierce ride that i sometimes switch out for jazz) 18" AAX stage crash 19" V crash 18" Fierce crash As you can tell I definitely model my set like portnoy haha, PPRROOOOOOOOOGG!!!!
Sometimes i like it slightly higher or lower, mostly higher though but I always go for lowest possible pitch on the lower 3 toms (3rd rack and floor) as well as bass drum to get a nice effect.
Thought I might post some pics of EPEK drums to show off the quality of my kit haha, honestly they are great drums! If you have the money they are great custom drum makers. Mine is in the finish of the 9 pc. set (Green shifty flake lacquer) My 'floor' toms are suspended like the green kit except one on either side attached to a rack.
Damn! Those are some nice sets! @RedeyeJedii What heads do you use? I have Evans G2 dry coated and they get out of tune after like 3 seshes..
I used to drum back in middle school. I was in the Jazz band(LOL) but I also played the bass. We had 2 drummers so we would take turns on both. I quit playing once I hit high school. I wish I would have never quit cause I probably would have kicked some butt if I kept playing.
Im in jazz band now at my high school, nothing like being torched behind a kit and playing some jazz. After all, jazz somewhat revolved around marijuana...
been drumming for about 7 years...drummed for the jazz band in high school, i was in the drumline in my school, and i have had many bands with my friends through the years.....my favorite drummer of all time...Jon Fishman from Phish. most incredible drummer I've ever heard. Phenomenal drumming throughout this song. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpe6p9sIgbk]YouTube - PHISH 8-17-96 "It's Ice" - CLIFFORD BALL DVD preview[/ame]
Again, I switch it out every few weeks or so because i record but mostly clear remo emperors on top and remo diplomats on the reso with ambassadors on the floor toms with diplomats on reso. Remo clear powerstrok3 batter with my epek ported/ring perforated reso and finally remo controlled sound with ambassador snare side.
Normally I keep the reso and batter heads at equal tension, but if I'm playing live I tighten the resos a little more to get the downward inflection for better projection.
