Any Drummers on GC ?

  1. I have to respectfully disagree here. As the lyricist for every Rush song (with the exception of their first album and maybe 4 songs that Alex or Geddy have written), Peart's "soul," his opinions, his mindset are reflected in every song on which he plays.

    Take a look at his video, A Work in Progress. In the mid '90s, after having been drumming for 25+ years-and already respected as one of the world's greatest drummers-Peart studied with Freddie Gruber and completely modified his playing style. Why? Because he cares about his playing and his music, and instead of resting on his laurels he wanted to keep expanding and improving.

    Take a look at his other video, Anatomy of a Drum Solo. You can tell from watching that how passionate he is about drumming. As Gumbo said, give his books a read, particularly Traveling Music: Soundtrack to My Life and Times and Roadshow: Landscape with Drums: A Concert Tour by Motorcycle.

    I have nothing against Danny Carey, but Neil Peart is just such a fucking monster musician that I find it hard to believe almost any drummer out there puts more of his soul into his music.

    By the way, how much of the Rush catalog have you been exposed to? Have you heard anything from their Vapor Trails album?

    I'm with you on Carter Beauford, though...that man is the shiz. Have you seen the video of him playing "Say Goodbye"?

  2. Since we're posting pictures of our kits, I used to rock this setup...they were my dad's drums that he let me play on. Since then I've gotten a new Pearl Forum set, but I don't have any good pictures of it.

  3. I've heard a bit of every album.. I just don't like it.. Idk it just doesn't go well with me.. He's a great musician no doubt but I feel more of Dannys drumming than Neils. It's just personal opinion, I'm not putting him down but for me Danny is better.

    And yea Carter Beauford is great, love his video an love his style.. His new album is a little soft.. I don't know if it's jut me hut I can play most of his newer songs, compared to his older work which I can't touch.. I got number 41 down (such a sexy song) but I can't touch grey street lol.

    Drumming for 7 years. I use a Pearl set, can't remember the model.
    I usually turn on the arpeggiator on my keyboard and play to that. I really enjoy jamming to this song:

    You may recognize this, it was sampled recently...

    Favorite drummer is Jaki Liebezeit. He is said to be "half man, half machine" and is known for his grooves.

  8. Yep. It played at an independent theater in my hometown (Columbia, SC) over the summer, and it was awesome to see it with a big group of fellow Rush fans (all three showings of the documentary were sold out, which surprised me). I also have it on DVD.

    Have you seen the bonus features on the second disc of the DVD set? There's an extended cut of the "business meeting" in the hunting lodge they show briefly during the credits of the documentary. Priceless. :D

    Thats awsome man, its really cool that people out there do that stuff for people.

    @echoe09
    Oh I see, yeah i had the same set up as you with two hats set up next to each other.. I didnt like it because i had to reach all the way out and still be abel to hit the snare. But if you can do it, props man.

    @WeeZy F baBy
    Nice!! sick cover, and nice set! I wish i could have a double bass drum, but i dont have room for that kinda monster haha..

    @passage2bangkok
    I'm digging the old school drums man, kind of remindes me of Tommy Chong's set from Up In Smoke I've always wondered, does not having the reso heads make a drum sound better then with them on?

    @WizardOfNeptune
    Haha, i like how his cymbals are set up in like an Iron Maiden type set up...

    Since were all posting pics of are kits , heres one of my old set... I sold like half of it on craigslist haha, i"ll post another one of my current sometime tomorrow.

  11. watching that makes me feel like ive never even picked up a drumstick before holy moly

  12. My DVD is in the mail as we speak. I have not seen any bonus features yet, but I've heard that footage is awesome.

    Not necessarily better or worse, but a bit different. The drums will project a whole lot more without the resonance heads. Also, seeing as how there's only one head, you cannot "bend" the sound. Some people look at this as making it easier to tune, while others look at it as limiting creativity.

    I prefer playing with resonance heads, but that's just me. I actually like playing around with tension combinations.

  13. im a drummer. i like to try and come up with new shit. like to keep it new. ya know.
    i like to warm up with:
    slayer-raining blood
    dream theater-as i am
    metallica-one

    those my three main ones

    Blaze on:smoke:

  14. Not particularly. Those drums didn't have resonant heads because they didn't have a set of lugs on the bottom where you could put a resonant head. The tom-toms on that kit didn't sound that great, anyway...but they did look cool. :cool:

  15. Please report back to me once you've watched it. :wave:

    Also, you're right about the resonant heads. That set projected very well, but the toms always sounded kind of flat and dull to me. You can even see in the picture where my dad put duct tape on the toms in an attempt to improve the sound...didn't really work. The Pearl kit I have now sounds so much better.

  16. i cant drum, but i fucking love drummers... especially jazz drummers

  18. Buddy Rich is just amazingly ridiculous playing the drumset. I personally like Art Blakey.
