Best Material for SCROG Screen

Discussion in 'Plant Training' started by MuddyTires, Jul 27, 2010.

  1. Hey GC,

I'm in the process of building a SCROG screen for my grow cab. Just wondering what yall use for the actual screen. I already have holes drilled to string the screen up just debating about what to use. I've heard everything from hemp twine to chicken wire to offshore fishing wire. Please help me figure out what I should use!! Thanks GC:hello:

  2. I used PVC pipe and speaker wire, because I had it handy and it was flexible enough, yet strong enough.

  3. I was told that fishing line is too thin and will cut your plants.

  4. yea I was worried about that with the fishing line and the fishing wire that I had...so any suggestions? maybe like some hemp twine, or yarn, or kite string?

  5. Anybody?? I'm goin to the store here in the next few hours to get some things and would like to pick up my screen material while I'm out.....

  6. Just go to Home Depot and get a piece of wire mesh fencing with 4x4 mesh. Rolls are 4 foot wide and HD will cut as much as you want...Cheap...Easy and Clean

  7. Thanks for the reply. But I already made the frame and drilled holes to string up a 2.5''x 2.5'' screen, just looking for the best material to use. The wire mesh fencing could be a good idea for someone else though...Plus I'm growing in a pretty small cabinet so 4''x4'' holes would really only give me like 9 total holes in the screen...

  8. the plastic line for weedwackers works real well:wave:100 lb. fishing line too

  9. And you have completely disregarded my speaker wire suggestion why? Its totally pliable, yet strong, and has a rubber coating. What more could you want out of a screen material?

  10. No disrespect dude. Its a great idea but after thinking about it it wasn't a good plan for me because I didn't exactly have spair speekerwire laying around. Still a great idea man.

  11. When I built my screen i just got some Picture hanging wire. Was a little hard to work with but it knotted all the interceptions with it and things tight and worked very well.

  12. well if youre going to go buy something, i used 20 gauge wire i got from HD. its similar to speaker wire which is actually makes a decent screen. one tip though, if you are going to weave the entire screen from one long wire, be sure to cut the wire longer than you think you need because weaving that shit twice is NO fun.

also, badaxe, how did you mount your screen in your grow tent? my tent is a little smaller than yours 20"x36" and i'm looking for better ideas on how to get mine in there

  13. Since i used PVC pipe, I used the 3 way connectors on the corners. I put the male/female adapters on the threaded end (The end pointed at the floor)and just cut for 4 sections for the legs. The legs fit right up in the holes. You can sort of see the legs in the pic above. I did not have to put the back legs on though because it was such a tight fit in my tent, that it stand nice and upright with just 2 of the 4 legs attached.

I ended up getting some Mason Twine. It was like $2.50 for a huge spool of it. Just strung it up really tight. Only suggestion I have if someone uses this in the future is to burn the ends of the line with a lighter so the plastic melts the ends shut. I had a problem with the line un-twisting untill I did this. I'll keep yall updated if something goes wrong with it or this turns out to be a bad choice of screen material.

  15. you should get the braided masons line the twisted stuff is junk and you no y

  16. thought about goin that route but wanted to tie it. Ended up with mason twine. I'll let yall know how it goes:smoking::smoking:

  17. I think #18 mason line found at walmart or home depot works great. A couple bucks for 225ft. I like the bright pink and yellow! Looks great strung tight. I have a 42"x42" screen made from 2x2's as the frame with holes drilled at 2" spacing. Then run your string through like you were restringing a tennis racket. I also have a smaller one made with 1/2" pvc as the frame. Both work great! Good luck with your screen. I think you'll be satisfied with the mason line. I also think a spool of twist tie is a great investment. Found at home depot for a couple bucks. I use it to tie down branches if needed. Happy Harvesting!

  18. I've found that the mesh grate from an Ikea bunk bed works PERFECT!!! Don't know what to call it though. I hacked it from a friend's bed.

  19. im goin' weedwacker string next time..good dia. and crazy colors:p...last time i drilled then strung mine with 1 single strand each way..if ya do this ..careful as ya trim......what a pain in the ass that was:D
