How To Keep Your Bong Clean

Discussion in 'Smoking Accessories Q&A' started by Matt Mernagh, Mar 31, 2009.

  1. Keeping a bong clean and fresh is a chore many potheads aren't into. For some stoners their bongwater becomes really gross before they even begin to consider cleaning. Yet a clean bong is important for enjoying a great toke. In fact a great toke begins with a clean bong.

How can a cannabis enthusiast enjoy the rich exotic flavor of their recently scored stone if their bong has been blackened by many sessions and the water hasn't been changed in a month? They can't! These adulterants interfere with weed taste and high.

A dirty bong is like eating gourmet food off dirty dishes.

After the effort and expense gone through to score good stone you owe yourself a clean bong. In these dire economic times a clean bong is a simple stoner joy. A sparkling bong is something to come home to after a hard day at work.

Plenty of professional potheads clean their bong following every session. Breaking out a bottle of 99% ISO Alcohol and a carton of Epsom salt. They swirl a mix of ISO, Epsom salt and water around in their bong, sometimes several times, until the bong is purchase clean again. The salts work as a scrubbing agent and the ISO as a solvent.

Their bongs never get to the point of ever needing anything more intense than a swirl.

But even this method of cleaning is tiresome.

Not everyone has obsessive compulsive friends who will gladly clean their whole bong collection after a sativa session. Though its worth having someone in your crew who has this affliction as your bongs will never be cleaner.

Plenty of professional potheads desire this level of cleanliness, but don't want too put in the effort. Not too mention constantly having a stock of Epsom salt and ISO alcohol kicking around.

My friend Marijuana Mage has come up with a darn good solution!

Lemon juice in the bong water. That's it! Lemon juice. But not too much lemon juice. Or this will ruin the taste of the toke. Add about ten drops of lemon juice to the water of your newly cleaned bong.

This only works if the bong has been cleaned already.

Marijuana Mage has been perfecting the idea for a month now. We've done several sessions together and I'm amazed at the results.

We held a heavy session yesterday. Inhaling Skunk #1, Grape Fruit and Nebula. Before we began Mage dumped ten drops into the freshly loaded bong to demonstrate the power of lemon juice. After a good session trying all three marijuana strains, including replacing the bong water, Mage was able to pack his bong up almost as clean as when it arrived.

It'd become a little honey colored. With very little THC residue.

That ganja gunk does contain THC. Though we won't smoke it, police, prosecutors and judges will punish the pothead caught with bong resin. Serious! Happened to a friend of mine. Upon arrest police will confiscate a bong, lay a charge of possession of paraphernalia by testing the gunk for THC.

A nice clean bong will foil these police paraphernalia plans!

Let us know if intend to keep your bong pre-clean using this method.

  2. A nice read, however a bit misleading in that lemon juice will prevent THC from adhering to the inside of the bong and thus preventing prosecution.

It is exactly as you stated, a nice clean bong will foil the prosecution, but it has to be 110% clean using the ISO+SALT combination to have all residue removed, lemon juice alone will not accomplish this level of cleanliness needed to pass customs/police inspection.

Again, lemon juice may indeed keep the bong water cleaner and the bong overall fresher for longer, but it will not prevent paraphernalia charges.

I look forward to your future posts.

but i didnt know that about lemon juice, i'll check it out!

  4. Wow, I'll have to try this next time I smoke up. I clean my bong regularly, usually once every 3 days or so... I use it daily. Just some ISO and kosher salt. Does the trick every time.

  5. I try to clean mine every 1-2 sessions. No one likes a dirty bong.

  6. that's a great clarification. sounds like u have experience in the area. there is indeed some residue after a session with lemon juice in the bong water. lemon juice does require less cleaning.

  7. as soon as i saw the title i thought: :p:eek:.. My bong hasnt been cleaned out in at least a month. I mean, i changed the water once this week, but its still got alot of residue inside the bubbler. this thread motivates me to do it today:)

  8. i used to be OCD about cleaning my glass, but lately i have been letting it go a couple days to the point wheree the water turns a greenish color.

i'm gonna try the lemon juice idea today.

  9. Isn't there already a sticky about how to clean bongs and pieces in the rec. use forum? Sounds like a duplicate thread on an old OLD topic.

Lemon juice was a good idea though. I would rather just use everclear and epsom salt. Works freakin' wonders. But be DAMN SURE to wash it out THOUROUGHLY!!!

  10. sounds like a good idea I will also be giving this a whirl.. Am I wrong in assuming lime juice would do that same?

    btw You write very well.

  11. I herd about the Grunge off stuff working very well...I personally use rubbing alcohol with RICE and it cleans my pieces pretty well

  12. I gotta admit I'm OCD about keeping it clean. I usually get it 100% clean once a day.

Stick the diffuser and bowl in grunge off for 20+ minutes and clean the tube out with iso and dishwasher soap. The soap works like the salt does but leaves the bong smelling much cleaner.

  13. I have to clean my bongs often, or at least change the water after every session. I can't stand smoking out of a dirty bong. But I have one of those tiny molino bubbler bong things that are a bitch to clean.

  14. See, I told you guys that lemon juice works! and YET, nobody listens to me.

    Anyways, good article.

  15. It might be a good tip (I've yet to try it), but from a writer's POV, I can't agree with this...I'm not saying Matt doesn't get his point across, but I find plenty of grammatical errors and such, and it makes me wonder if he's getting paid to write. It also makes me wonder why I don't have that job :p Maybe he's just in a hurry? I dunno, maybe I'm just a grammar nazi or somethin...

On topic, I clean my bong pretty much daily. The smell of stale bong water absolutely disgusts me, and I just can't take a hit in good conscience. I use 420 cleaner (or "Bling," essentially the same thing as 420, and they're both just ISO and salt), I'll have to find some lemons now :D I've been wondering if adding something to the bong water would act to maybe precipitate the crap out of the smoke and leave it in the water. Maybe the lemon juice just acts as a solvent to keep the gunk dissolved and in the water, rather than depositing on the glass? I'm sure someone will figure out why and how it really works. Then it's off to the races for whoever can patent a flashy bottle of "420 Super Lemon Power," just lemon juice with some color in it :smoke:

  16. I am a COMPLETE spelling and grammer nazi. I hear you out, and agree with you, as well. I would never pay for these, but I do find the info in them interesting.

I do not speak the the English language well. I need to re-learn the basics.
But please re-read what I quoted from you. I did not even read on from that because you instantly lost any credibility to criticize Matt.

  18. I don't know why all these people keep talking shit on Matt to begin with. Mind you I have no clue to who he is. Are you all just jealous that he has his own section on the forum? Things like this make me wonder why I spend so much time browsing this site. I love the site, but I'm pretty sure most middle schoolers are more mature than half you fools that think smoking weed makes you cool.

  19. Shit sorry for triple posting I forgot what I even came back here in the first place for.
I decided to give my bong a nice little swirl with some salt last night. Well I'd like to give out a warning to any fellow dumb asses. When swirling your bong make sure to hold it by the base, not the stem. My bong now has a pressure crack going around the entire stem where it meets the base. It still holds water and was only $45 so no biggie just a warning! And yes I called myself a dumb ass.

  20. to answer this i believe that lemon juice acts the same as chlorine in a pool. it breaks down and incinerates some, but not all particles before reaching the glass. thus, causing less buildup;therefore, less times in between cleaning.
