Getting ready to flip my veg plants in about 4 days and though they're otherwise very healthy I just noticed signs of both powdery mildew and Thrips. I'd like to get them knocked down in a hurry so I can get on with flowering and was wondering if there were any ipm recipes or products that would target both problems?
Have had great success against Thrips in the past with Monterey garden spray (Spinosad). Not quite as sure what works well against pm as my last round was my 1st experience with it in over 6 yrs growing. I have two products, green cleaner (soybean oil, sodium lauryl sulphate) and PM remover (garlic powder, lactose, potassium bicarbonate). I also have all the ingredients for cootz/bas style ipm sprays such as neem, aloe, silica, essential oils.
Could I just mix the Monterey with one of the pm products without burning my plants? Are there any things that just attack both problems? Should I go on attack the next few days and still flip on schedule or delay?

  2. Hopefully someone will chime in soon. I don't personally have any experience with either thrips or PM.

If you have dealt with this in the past with success I would get on this right away, though, especially since your plants aren't even flowering yet. Waiting never helps. You could alternate every other day at lights out with the product you have for PM and the Spinosad for the thrips.

Even if you were to flip in a couple days you've still got a couple weeks before your plants start flowering anyhow so I don't see any negativity in spraying and only positives. Good luck.

  3. i remember coot saying he never saw PM since he started using neem oil foliars.

  4. Spinosad is quite complex its a mix of 10 things I think -all derived from the same fermentation soup. I don't know if any of those other concoctions would deform any of the compounds.

If you do decide to mix and apply all at once I would spray right after you mix in the second compound as to minimize mixed time.

The neem oil would be a great follow up if you dont decided on it for the initial PM, it explodes thrips eggs if I'm remembering correctly

Js plan sounds safe and effective

  5. i beat PM with a combination of potassium bicarbonate, potassium silicate, tea tree oil and thyme oil alternating with chitosan sprays. I also added potassium silicate at 50 ppm to every watering. Lollipopping, more circ fans under the canopy and running a dehumidifier at night all help as well.
I woulds imagine one could add neem oil to the recipe and kill thrips with it too.
    Best of luck

  6. Spinosad has been used together with other products for control of disease and pests. This is called a tank mix, here is some information on tank mixes and how to determine if they are compatible:

  7. I'd bet a little tobacco extract added to the bicarb/essential oil PM spray would be make it a lot more effective at killing thrips as well.

  8. Thanks for all the advice y'all. Did more digging and found that the green cleaner product I had is supposed to work on both. Did 2 days of that and then a neem/aloe/ silica. Looking pretty good but I'll be keeping up spraying until 2-3 weeks into flower.

One more quick question. I'm also going to be pulling the plants out and burning sulphur in my grow spaces. I never use it around my plants as I read that it effects flavor. Would that be true even if just used in early veg?

  9. Or you could use a systemic like myclobutanil. Jus' sayin'

The whole premise of organic pest control is doing it before it happens. I speak from experience..last year I had to battle rust for almost a month because of it..

Are you sure it's thrips? Are their almost 'silvered' wounds on the leaves?

  10. yes, I'm sure it's thrips. I've had em a couple times in the past.

What exactly is myclobutanil? I've been able to beat every pest or problem I've had so far (including the Borg) organically so I probably won't be starting up chems now.

  11. From what I gather ppl burn sulfer with plants in the room.

It kinda defeats the purpose imo to take the plants out and then bring back potential spores on the plants

Just my opinion, also I'm glad to hear you are making progress

  12. Honestly I bought the sulphur burner more as a way to bomb the grow spaces without using expensive/nasty foggers. I've never used it around plants because I am concerned it will effect flavor.

Once the last harvest is off the lines the plan is to move the plants out to my clean work space and fully spray them down. While they're drying I'll clean/sulphur/bugbomb the rooms.

  13. I just found PM in my veg room again as well. I have some barely rooted clones in there that I'm a little worried about because I'm hesitant to use anything harsh on them since they're so small. I gave them a thorough spray with chitosan yesterday but if that doesn't work I might try burning sulfur. I bought a sulfur burner before but never used either it so I'll let you know how it works out for me.
