Warhammer 40k

Discussion in 'Gamer's Heartbeat' started by VikingToker, Feb 6, 2016.

  1. Me and a buddy just started the miniature game after salivating at the brutal art for years. It's really fun, even just gluing and painting is meditative

I'm building a Machine Cult army, anyone else into this?

  2. Totally. Was always more a Fantasy aficionado, although did have a few small but neat Space Marine models.

There's a Blade (Mithander maybe?) who occasionally would post up some o his collection.

There's also a Total War: Warhammer game incoming. Tidy.

  3. was going too at one point, might do in the future

  4. I think I played from maybe 95 to 2005, somthing along those lines give or take.

Fantasy: Dark elves (main) & Night Goblins (secondry), breifly tried undead right before they changed everything and split them in two so gave up on that.
40k: Tyranids (first), Imperial Guard (later), and I had a few space marines at one point.
Epic 40k: Space Orks but I also had the marines that come in the main box game done as dark angels.
GorkaMorka: might actually have been my favourite to play, it was certainly the one i got most into customising the models with.
I had a blood bowl team at one point too.

between maybe 15-17 a couple of my regular opponents gave up, the ones in the year above went to uni, a few others I saw a lot less of after 16 because they moved to different places for a levels. So I began to enjoy it less (i was always more about the fighting than the painting) and that kind of coincided with when I started spending most my money on weed instead of warhammer. Then I sold up (models wise, Iv still got some tatty codexs, rule books and issues of white dwarf somewhere) rather than move them to uni with me. I regret that, got very little (largley because of bad paint jobs and wanting to just take the first offer and shift it) and probably drank all that money in freshers week.

I imagine a lot has changed since I stopped. But part of me would like to go back to it should I ever have the time.

  5. I think I've spotted one - two - three Europeans?

Seems to have more traction in Europe

  6. I have always wanted to get into WH40k but the cost is pretty crazy, given the size of the armies that can be in play.

  7. Oh absolutely

I always loved the brutal art in the series, but both the idea of figurines and the wallet beatdown always kept me at bay

I started just before christmas, where I watched a 'battle report' like a replay of a match with commentary, sportsy, and was just insta-hooked

It's like an expanded version of chess

  8. Finished building my 1200-point army last night, lots of painting still to do but soon gonna be doing my first match vs my buddy, who fields a chaos army

Shaping up to be an interesting matchup, his troops are big, tough, heavy-hitting melee and mine are fragile, accurate and mobile shooters

  9. I've spent close to 3k this year buying 40k stuff....I have an ultramarine and necron army.
Recently bought Relicos Militairum been building and painting that. I also bought an imperial knight warden but I refuse to assemble it until I finish painting the many many unfinished models I have lying around haha. I have a couple adeptus mechanus dune crawlers in my ultramarines force.

  10. Have a 1500 point ultrasmurf army, an a 2k chaos space marine army. Chaos was my brother and I chose the smurfs because of Uriel an I might go chaos and do honsou because he is a Badass.

Did it for a good while, but ultimately stopped cause the other players were cool, just boring. They didn't want to do any fun matches or anything, nah lemme pull my op necrons only thing I'm gonna roll. Or blood angels. But man the painting and putting together the army was probably my favorite part.

A good starter army can run you 100 - 250ish, then you are best off buying a paint set not just 3 or 4 pots, that'll run you from 100 to 250 depending on how big of a set you want to buy, brushes, clippers, basing stuff, glue and files around 50-150, the ruleset book is 100 or I think 50 if you get the e-book.

So low end 300, higher end pushing 1000. From there you just buy models sparingly and add slowly. In the end warhammer stuff usually holds it's value well, if your army is painted very well(HIGHLY unlikely when you first start haha) you can sell it for more than what you paid. If not you can at least get a return on your investment or slightly less if you paint like you have parkinsons. People sell absolute rubbish on ebay for hundreds of dollars, it's ridiculous.

Same as getting into any other hobby really, just depends on if you think it would hold your interest long enough to justify the investment. For me its a no brainer, it has alot to offer. First of all the lore is amazing, the backstory behind all the races is rich and interesting I cant wait to pick up new codex's, apocalypse and lore books to read them from cover to cover, the artwork is stunning, painting while watching movies or tv shows is a great way to spend my free time, and in the end I get to use what I've created to play a complex strategy/rpg'ish game. Even if I never played the game I get enough satisfaction from constructing and painting the models.

The only shitty part of the hobby I found was putting so much into the initial investment and sucking so horribly at painting. My first models were cringe worthy, I was almost too intimidated to paint them because everytime my model turned out shitty I felt like I was flushing my money down the drain haha.

  13. Couldnt you just strip the paint and try again if you fucked up?

As a Starcraft fan this always did interest me.

Yeah theres a few methods but you risk ruining the plastic depending on what method you use, the metal cast's can be easily stripped.

  15. This is exactly what I was thinking. I did some digging and found that it's possible to do, but very easy to fuck up and ruin the models (unless you manage to get metal cast models).

I may just stock up all the supplies I need for painting and assembly, then buy the models here and there. I'd love to play, but my interest lies mostly in the hobby of assembly and painting, along with lore. Finding a game in my area would probably be easy.

I've been huge on WH since I first discovered it as a young teen. I won't claim to have an extensive knowledge of the universe, but I know enough to have a feel for the dark, gritty, visceral universe.

Plus I've actually gotten quite a few of the WH video games and they do nothing but make me more interested in the models themselves.

I've also been looking into Warmachines/Hordes by Privateer Press. Not quite as dark and gritty, but the lore is pretty solid. I like that armies from each game function under completely different rule sets, but the two rule sets are designed to be compatible, so you can play Warmachines sets against Hordes. The points to field a viable army are far less than those in Warhammer. The initial investment would likely be half that of WH.

  16. you know what, if i ever get rich ill get into this haha

  17. that's great man, beautiful work on that model, digging the detail on the orb

I'm entirely new to this as of a few weeks ago, painting skills are coming along nicely, but I can feel the white belt* for sure

*that time when you totally suck but you get loads better each time

I'll be putting up my Adeptus Mechanicus army when I'm satisfied with the paint

  18. Could have posted all of this myself, at different times in my newfound hobby interest. Painting is really relaxing. It keeps you engaged without demanding much of your faculties, it's downright meditative, you feel refreshed after a few hours of painting.

Also the steep financial cost and rules complexity is at first a big detractor, unless you're really into it. I've been a dork on the lore for ages, read all the wiki on my smartphone over a couple of years taking shits at work.

I had my first half a match yesterday with the guy I started this with in January - still really shaky on the rules, my 1400 pt Skitarii army vs my buddy's 1300-something Chaos Space Marine. We started at 5 and had to call it off at eleven, only on turn 4, it took ages have to recheck and clear up rules, I'm sure it's gonna go faster without having to read half a page every 5 minutes

I only had 1 unit that could deal with his Land Raider tank lol, so when he destroyed that unit really early on I was fucked, he was closing in quickkkk

These dudes saved the day tho, Sicarian Infiltrators

Neurostatic aura is fucking bad ass, they have this fuckyou tech that ruins your day, makes your eyes bleed, your throat parch up, your ears ring with tinnitus, all radio chatter just turns into loud static, and these stealthed dudes step out of the mist and cut you up

The little uzis are super MVP, a unit of five of these held the enemy at the gates with a lot of lucky rolling and when we called it off it looked even

TLDR; The strategy game is complex, rewarding, and has a constant troll factor from the random dice which makes it feel like a dynamic battle, in which the commander, much as in real life, only can affect probabilities of the outcome

  19. Warhammer 40k inspired Starcraft, Warhammer fantasy inspired Warcraft

Inspired it so much that the company behind WH sued Blizzard

    Hydralisk much? (Tyranid Trygon)

High templar/Dark Templar? (Eldar Farseer / Dark Eldar Warlock)

    Hell - it's about time

As someone who nerded SC/SC2 for a decade and a half before getting into WH, Blizzard did a creepy amount of copy-pasting

  20. Progress is dead slow for me lately. I've been working non stop lately and I just dont have the energy to paint anything when I get home. That and I'm pretty hooked on Xcom 2 right now. Gonna try and hammer out at least 10 models next set of days off.
