I have an idea that I've posted about before but I did a little more research and I really think it's a good idea. I will post a picture with this comment to show why. I want to feed my pot plant coconut palm sugar. It's not acidic it's more along the lines of alkaline. The reason I want to use it is that it has alot of nutrients one of them being nitrogen and its organic. So I'll post the photos that I screen shotted and tell me what you think. I would like to know how to even the pH balance out though since it is alkaline and I think pot grows at 6.5 (slightly acidic). Do you think I should use both brown sugar and coconut palm sugar since they both have great nutrition?
Another question, my soil dosent have all that much aeration. Should I carefully dig up my plant, place it in another pot while i add pebbles and sand for more aeration? Or should I just let it go? All it has right now is some perlite but I don't think it's enough. I only water it about 2 to 3 times a day and it's a pretty big pot that I don't water the whole thing since the root system dosent reach that far anyway and the water still takes a long time to evaporate and to be drank by the plant.
Also what would happen if I fed my plant sugar during the vegetative state?

  2. Is there nothing else that your able to source that has been time tested that can give around the same nutritional value, seems were reinventing the wheel here, but if that is what you can get a hold of, then why not try it, shit, maybe your into something, it may be horrible and kill your plant, but maybe not, this post caught my attention because... Don't really know,
Did you say you ONLY water 2 or 3 times a day? Seems a little much, but again, if it's working for you, be sure to let us know how it turns out

  3. I think trying palm sugar and seeing how it effects the plants would be a good experiment but you should probably get a grow or two under your belt before start experimenting. I looked at your other post and your soil seems like it's pretty low quality which may be part of your aeration problem. you mentioned that it was mixed with perlite but I didn't see any. Your soil should be at least 25% perlite or pumice to aid in aeration of the roots. You shouldn't be watering 2-3 times per day. It should be more like every 2-3 days if you're in the right size pot and watering appropriately. If your plant looked better I would take it out an repot in better soil with perlite but it looks pretty sick, transplanting now might shock it. If you still plan on adding the palm sugar you should dissolve it in the water that you plan on feeding to the plants and check it with your ph pen, then use ph up or ph down depending on how far out of the 6.3-6.8 range you are. That will take care of the alkaline problem.

  4. I wouldn't be experimenting at this point. Use the tried and tested methods to get the plant healthy, and once it's in good health it can be worth trying stuff out.

I seriously doubt the plant will be able to utilise anything in the coconut water or sugar. However, the bacteria and fungus in the soil may feed on it and excrete chemicals that the plant can use. So things like this are better added when the soil is being made before the plant is even put in it.

I wouldn't add pebbles or sand, but your final mix should be about 30-35% perlite. I wouldn't re-pot until the plant has either outgrown it's current pot or the soil is giving you serious problems

  5. Well I'll take the advice since this is my first grow. But I really want to use this coconut sugar and see what happens so I might test it on some other plants I own.

  6. If you're watering 2 to 3 times a day, you're watering WAY too much. If your soil is dense, don't worry about rocks or pebbles, just add a sufficient amount of perlite to the mix to get it light and arid like it needs to be. These plants don't like constant moisture around their roots and if your soil doesn't drain well, that's what you get. Then you say you water 2 to 3 times a day on top of that. STOP! LOL Repot your plant. They are weeds after all, and you don't have to handle them with kid gloves. During the veg stage, you can do lots of things with them without fear of anything weird happening. But repot into good light and arid soil with adequate drainage. New soil will provide fresh nutrition for the plant. After you water it in......LEAVE IT ALONE UNTIL IT IS ALMOST TOTALLY DRY BEFORE WATERING AGAIN. This is one of the hardest things for new growers to do. If you have a small plant in a large container, it takes considerable time for that plant to get rooted in and back to growing foliage. They handle their root work first before anything else and often, the lack of foliage growth while the plant is rooting in will cause the grower to think something is wrong with their plant. Then they start to over water or give nutes when the plant doesn't need it and this will create more problems. These plants will always tell you when something is wrong and pretty much what that something is. The grower has to become familiar enough with the plant and growing process to be able to understand what the plant is telling them. This only comes with time and growing. The more you do it, the better you get at it and the more it all makes sense. It took me about a year before I felt good about growing....from seed or clone all the way to harvest. There's a whole lot more to it than I ever thought there would be. But, if I can do it, absolutely anybody can!! Good luck! TWW
