Slow Dwc growth

Discussion in 'Sick Plants and Problems' started by h20james, Jan 26, 2016.

  1. New to this shit, my first seedling sprouted on January 6th, at first i had some temperature problems it was too cold. Then when i started to put the lights on them it got a little too hot, highest it ever got was 88 for maybe 2 to 3 hours and they were and are inside a 2 by 4 by 6 grow tent. But since the beginning it has been very on point always between 70-80 degrees dropping down to maybe 65 at night and at lowest maybe 60 for a little while. The ph has been on point for the most part, usually around 5.8, once it went up to 6.5 ish but only on one occasion. I have 2 pumps each rated for 125 gallons aerating 3 5-gallons buckets buckets, 6 inch air stones and one bucket is getting two. The water level in the net cups is pretty high i have it almost to the bottom of the rock wool cubes but that is because they were growing so slowly and i wanted to make sure the roots were getting water. The water is tap water but the ppm is 130 so i still use it. I've put up some pictures to show how small they are. They don't really show any signs of disease one is a little droopy but nothing else. They are growing slow as fuck the smaller one is younger than the other two. Some roots have started showing out of the bottom of the biggest one two long ones and the other kinda big one has one root coming out of the side. any tips on why they are growing so slowly and what i should do. also using 2 led's called 300 watts but they pull 140 watts each.

Relative humidity seems a bit low for babies. Generally seedlings and babies need higher humidity than normal. Also how close are you lights and are they running at full power. If the plant is stressed full light won't do it any favors. Also, is the rockwool actually getting wet? If the medium is too dry or completely water logged that will affect the plants. Is that limestone that the rock wool is in? If so get rid of it. The acidic nature of your solution will destroy those stones as they would be calcium carbonate.

Yeah i forgot to mention that my humidity is low but i thought having dwc and letting the plants soak up more water would counter act that. Do you think it is a big enough problem to slow down the growth that much. Also the stones are hydroponic grow stones, it doesn't say specifically what they are made of but they seem to be made for this. Follow up question from the pictures and knowing the two bigger ones are about 20ish maybe a lil less days old is the growth as slow as it feels for me or is it nothing to worry about. The light is also about 2 feet above the plants.

  4. No RH will not be changed by a closed bucket. What is temp of water in Rez? Optimally should be 65°

  5. if your light is 300w you may want to experiment with moving it a bit closer. Light sources follow an inverse law as opposed to the sun which gives you even lumens across the plant. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inverse-square_law
Also, if you have low humidty plus an extractor fan running you are essentially placing your plant in a wind tunnel. You're right to a point saying that RH isn't that important but when you have low RH plus a constant strong air current you may get issues. Honestly thougn I'd put my $$$ on the light distance maybe move it to 12 inches above the canopy and see what happens. Listen NaturalMistik too. Try to keep the res at 65 and no more than 72.

  6. The buckets are 60 and 62 ish degrees right now. I have never checked the res temp before, does it matter that much if the room temp is usually alright. Also, now that I'm thinking about it, at night the buckets may get really cold i haven't checked but does that matter or even happen if the rom temp is alright. Also the light came with a recommendation of putting them that high I'll lower them and see what happens. I don't use an extractor fan yet i just have the flaps on the tent open and the front kind of unzipped. Any other ideas about what could be up?

  7. Yes the Rez temp matters. Too low and growth will come to a halt, too high and it increases risk for pythium and other horrible things.

  8. A floating fish tank thermometer is like $4, well worth the $

  9. Cover base with rocks also...
