Homemade College Grow Box

Discussion in 'Micro Grows' started by capotwins, Jan 19, 2016.

  1. What's up everyone!! this is my first grow and I've been very interested in growing for some time now. I live with 2 roomies in a rented house who are all 100% on board, but smell is going to be a factor I have to look at moving forward.

My box is made of two Home Depot cardboard boxes (the largest ones they had for home moving) duct tape together very soundly and reinforced structurally with PVC. I believe it's 22x22x60 total, I have my hand in some pics for reference.
I'm using 8 ghetto-rigged CFL 6500K 23W ecoboost lightbulbs. Aluminum foil is lined everywhere possible, 2 computer fans (1 80mm for intake, being helped by a 120mm outtake).

I only have FF Big Bloom for nutes for right now, wallet is looking very thin, will buy some tiger bloom when I can. Soil is FF Ocean Forest which I've heard is very decent so I'm not concerned about that.

I have two mystery bagseeds planted, same strain tho. In my excitement of growing life from my own two hands, it appears I overwatered them a bit causing the leaves to droop like they are. Temps stay between 85 and 70, and humidity is a bit low as it likes to stay in the low 20s....

Let me know if I am doing anything wrong or any other words of wisdom are much appreciated!!!
So yeah, first time grower, would love to get this right first try although I expect to run into and learn from mistakes. All input is VERY welcome, let me know of any improvements I could make, but also remember I am on a very tight budget and have a mindset of "buy it only if necessary" Thank you guys, you have all inspired me to do this and I have already learned so much thru all of your posts!

  2. Looks good man, I'd toss the tin foil tho it's probably gona end up hurting more than helping. Seedlings look fine btw

  3. When you have the money ditch the cardboard and order a panda tarp and replace the cardboard and make a Velcro flap for a door and you just built a tent... As for the aluminum foil get rid of that asap foil creates hot spots at least use emergency blankets instead
Otherwise it looks good so far

  4. right on, what should I replace the foil with? cant really paint it unfortunately otherwise I'd paint it flat white

  5. Ah nevermind I see what you guys were saying, yeah ill grab some of those blankets from the hardware store tomorrow

  6. You could probably even leave the tin foil and put the blacket over that and the foil will keep a little bit of heat in for you in theory anyway

  7. Yeah ill do that tomorrow and post up some pics of the repair

  8. Ideally you wanna put Mylar up on the sides, but it's not really that big a deal in my opinion

  9. .

    Why's that?

  10. Mylars a good reflective surface that helps the undergrowth, but if you can't get it it's not gona make or break your grow

  11. But tin foil will kill your grow because it causes hot spots like a magnifying glass to aints

Hey guys, it's been a week, I believe it's day 7 since they officially sprouted. I like how they're doing, but their leaves have been curling a bit, and also a little droopy.

I don't think I am over watering them, but I might be, idk, what do you guys think?? One seems to be lagging behind slightly as well

Also, I took your guys' advice and got me two of those emergency blankets from Walmart, although I only needed one because it fits perfect I also installed two more fans, one as another intake, and my two most powerful CFM-wise together as one exhaust fan. Hopefully that creates some negative pressure and enough push out so I can install a carbon filter later in the grow.

Let me know what you guys think

  14. Day 9 and the babes are doing good, lots of growth everytime I check on them. I transplanted both into their final large pots and watered them with straight distilled instead of the 1/2Conc. Big Bloom I've been feeding conservatively. I moved the lights up just a titch, about 4" from the plant, giving it room to dig in to its new space while I have to be away for the next three days. I feel like they're growing pretty fast!

Tell me what you think, all comments welcome.

Hello agqin, day 21 is coming to a close and the youngins are looking very healthy. Getting bushy which is good. I topped them last Monday and one is just showing new node development while the other like usual lags behind slightly. Been feeding 4 Tbsp/gal every watering, and they look like they're loving it.

Let me know what you think!

  16. Hello again to all who cares, my (hopefully) girls are almost a month old, I think they're two days away from 31. They had alot of growth within the past week though. Feeding them 4th of Big Bloom every watering. I plan to install a scrog soon if I need to. I love their node spacing, it looks really tight to me. I think I'll give them another week or two of vegging and then I'll switch em. Praying for no bananas!! They look pretty healthy tho :D definitely indica since they're so bushy, but I've been being good about keeping the lights close, had a couple of light burns :|

Any comments or advice is much appreciated!

  18. Hey again, kinda going at this by my lonely it looks like haha but quick update!

The young adults are now 5 1/2 weeks old, looking gooood, keep growing noticeably every day. I figured I would've run into alot more problems by now, but hey its only vegging right now and the true test of stealth and care comes with these next few weeks.

I'm going to be switching bulbs, putting in 8 2700K T5s and switching them to 12/12 this next Monday. Hopefully I haven't totally wasted my time.
Even just getting one girl would be great, give one plant the whole cab and let it live free. If both are gals I will be ecstatic but I am concerned mainly with smell. I have two ~60cfm PC fans installed on top of each other to make one more powerful exhaust fan. I plan to make some sort of refillable carbon filter that contains a thin amount of carbon scrubber inside so it doesn't affect the airflow too bad.

I have been trying these carbon filter pads that you can buy on amazon that I don't think work overly well, although I haven't tested them truly, but I don't have high hopes for them. You know how weed plants smell like... well plants, but it's a very indicative smell. Well those pads seems to do a good job with that because I walk into my closet where my plants are held and it just smells like breath, not stinky breath tho xD just like you'd imagine straight warm CO2 smelling.

Fuck I'm high and rambling again, anyways take a look, lemme know what you think as always, always looking to improve my virgin style

Also I was thinking about Scroging them, but I don't think I'll need to considering all the space in the cab I have left

  19. +1 for panda film. stuff works

  20. Yeah that stuff works great, but they're about 6 1/2 weeks old now, and I decided to switch them to flowering on Monday, 3 days ago. I bought 8 t5 100W replacement (23W actual), got em straight 12/12.

I have good news as well, I believe I have a girl! This is the plant that has always been just slightly ahead of the other, the plant on the left-back portion of the box. I still cannot tell with the slower one, but time will tell. Perhaps my rookie eyes can't see the signs on the Right one. Oh well, tell me guys what you think on that photo with the flash, thank you.

Going on a Grateful Dead binge right now from the good news. I just picked up some Fox Farm Tiger Bloom from the local hydro store, along with a few G of distilled water. I made a mix of 3T Big Bloom like normal along with 1T(3t) Tiger Bloom. I think the girl(s?) will love it, I have spring break coming up where I will have to leave my babies for a week I'll have my brother water them for me bc his spring break is a week later than mine

Let me know what you guys think as always!
