Spinal Fusion

Discussion in 'Medical Marijuana Usage and Applications' started by CamDupont, Jan 15, 2016.

  1. So I recently (Monday morning) had spinal fusion surgery and found that nicotne hinders the bone fusion. Does marijuana have the same effect?

  2. Dude you had spinal fusion surgery, and you are worried about what smoking will do? Forget about it man, take a break for a good couple months or so. Jeez.

  3. I'm only concerned with the pain relief. Trying to stay away from the oxy and Valium they prescribed me

  4. I only know about cigarettes and bone growth. I did not quit smoking and I took two years to heal, even broke a plate and pin. Don't smoke. And I would always use edible form for medical anyway, that will heal you.

  5. Just smoking weed for pain control is a roller coaster waiting to happen. Use edibles for better relief, they are easy enough to make.

  6. no. tobacco stalls the healing process not cannabanoids. the cannabanoids will help your situation so long as you don't use tobacco based products with your cannabis.

    have fun healing!!

  7. I mean, who doesn't like crispy bacon, but hush...

not only will marijuana help his pain, but it will lessen his dependency for opiates.

  8. I am having a double fusion later this month and have been looking for an answer to a similar question. They have you stop using NSAIDS before surgery and don’t allow them after. My understanding is that a big part of that isn’t about the risk of bleeding, but instead is that inflammation is needed for the fusion to heal. That made me wonder about cannabis use, since it is a powerful anti inflammatory. I asked my doctor and he gave me a weird answer, saying that “they work in different ways”. (I suspect he just didn’t know the answer.). So my question is if inflammation necessary for the bone to fuse and cannabis acts as an anti inflammatory, will it negatively affect my healing? I don’t want to have to use a large amount of opiates, and cannabis would likely work better, but will I be prolonging the healing process?

  9. Don't worry about CrispyBacon. He probably smokes it for recreation only and doesn't quite understand the therapeutic effects.

You shouldn't get any negative effects but whether or not it will help, you will have to experiment to find out. When I had major surgery, I stayed on the opioids for about one week then moved on over to cannabis and it did me well.

The strongest would be to get a hold of the oil. They call it Full Extract Cannabis Oil (FECO or RSO) and it's what you give to someone who is trying to kill tumors. It's the strongest expression of cannabis as medicine and it's clean to ingest. Good for a good night's rest and brings down blood pressure. You might just do well on the smoke or edibles though.

  10. Nicotine reduces bloodflow and impairs healing. Cannabis is a vasodilator and increases blood flow.

I recommend that you take edible cannabis to reduce the doses necessary of your prescription narcotics.

  11. I had spinal fusion surgery, L5 S1 a few years ago. Medical marijuana saved my life I really believe. I was taking enough narcotics after surgery due to complications, enough to kill a horse probably. One day I decided that enough was enough and went to see the medical marijuana doctor and found that my pain could be controlled with marijuana. I never took another opiate. If I continued on that same path with the opiates I probably wouldn't be here to speak about it today. Please use it in moderation but in my opinion marijuana is a life saver. Best of luck.

  12. Hi! I can totally relate and had the same questions for my surgeon but he didn't really give me a straight answer either. I'm hoping everything went well for you and you are healed! Just curious about your experience and if you would have done anything differently in regards to vaping/smoking MJ. Thanks!
